Tangerine Dream - The new remasters of the first 7 Virgin albums have been arriving and are simply incredible!

If, like me, you were not entirely satisfied with previous editions (the 1995 'definitive' series always seemed a bit flat and grainy- the 'Virgin Years' sets being a touch better, but only a touch) then you will be delighted with the new version. The 2 rather underrated later discs 'Cyclone' and 'Force Majeure' spring into vivid life and finally come across as masterworks of subtle detail and intricate melody.

'Phaedra' and the rest are just out of this world. You have NEVER heard TD sounding this good.

So there.

I am having a 'Summer of Synth' with cool ambient noises and glacial avalanches of sequencers to counteract the warmth.

Several exciting albums have come to my attention - and a couple of samplers for inspiration.

iNDEX05 from the DiN label:

Label boss Ian Boddy fills his spare time by taking tracks from various releases and weaves them into a flowing carpet of varying textures. Some very fine music on here and it tempted me into getting 'Weltenuhr' by guitarist Erik Wollo and ambient-synth specialist Bernhard Wostheinrich. This is a marvellously-recorded disc with great production, beautiful soaring guitar-work and is downright funky in places.

DiN46 - Weltenuhr - Erik Wøllo & Bernhard Wöstheinrich

Free Grooves from Groove Unlimited:

A free gift if you order 2 or more discs from Groove. With nice tracks from the likes of Gert Emmens and Volt.
Groove have a 20% summer reduction on their own catalogue of releases up to number GR-215 and there are excellent discs to be had from the above, plus Create, Ron Boots (label owner), Paul Ellis, Hemisphere - loads of good sequencing / Berlin School style EM.

(Put 'Free Grooves' into the shopping cart along with your order)

Whilst waiting impatiently for the second run of 'In Search of Hades' I have gone into TD-collector mode and have picked up a pair of intriguing discs.

'Cargo' by Thorsten Quaeschning's Picture Palace Music

Image

THORSTEN QUAESCHNING'S PICTURE PALACE MUSIC - WANDERBAUSTELLE (excerpt)

Before joining TD, Thorsten Q had his own band 'Picture Palace Music' who specialised in making contemporary soundtrack music for old silent movies, so the soundtrack world is not new to him. This is basically a solo album where he is occasionally assisted by a couple of string players (including TD's Hoshiko Yamane).

The film is a low-budget story about a businessman who wakes up to find himself trapped inside a cargo container with only a cellphone and is given 24 hours to pay a 10-million-dollar ransom. Apparently this is a very good thriller, although I haven't seen it yet.

The music has touches of TD from the 70's 'Sorcerer' and 'Encore' era and also you hear John Carpenter (think 'Christine') with lots of tense and claustrophobic moods being generated. Loads of fun for lovers of fat moog sounds here. And actually a rather good album in its own right.

After much searching - managed to find a 2nd hand copy of:

Tangerine Dream 'Blue Dawn'

Image

Tangerine Dream 2006 Blue Dawn Full Album

An oddity from the TD archives. It's the late 80's and Chris Franke had just left the band to do soundtrack work in Hollywood ('Babylon 5') leaving TD as a duo of Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger. They went into the studio and made the bright-and-shiny 'Optical Race' which has a poppier feel to it than previous work. Looking closely as the sleeve you will see that a 'Ralph Wadephul' appears in the credits and he was recruited as the new third member in time to make a small contribution to the album.

This trio went on a tour of the USA but Wadephul left afterwards as his wife had just had a baby and he decided that life on the road was not for him. A studio engineer by profession, he was used to a more settled life. Here is a recording of a concert from that tour.

Tangerine Dream - New Haven 1988

This lineup was capable of producing a vital and energetic sound full of emotion and mood. There is also a live-CD release called 'Rockface' from the same tour which is excellent. Most notable from the Froese/Haslinger period were the double-guitar battles the two would occasionally indulge in which were a sort of EM-Heavy-Metal (I saw them do that in Bradford in 86!!).

Anyway. During the on-the-road breaks, Ralph began to lay down demo's for the follow-up to 'Optical Race' and the plan was to go into the studio after the tour to make the new record. Some recording did take place but the project was shelved. Wadephul left to be replaced by Edgar's 16-year-old son Jerome.

16 years later, those demo's were dusted off by Edgar and he invited Ralph Wadephul back to finish off the tracks. The result is 'Blue Dawn' and it is an interesting record. The poppy mood is still apparent but with more depth and feeling. The sounds are somewhat different than 'standard' TD effects and Edgar lets rip with some of the fattest, meanest guitar work he ever put on tape.

It is a curiosity but shows a path that might have been taken had Wadephul stayed and Jerome had not arrived. As an album it certainly has its moments and, combined with the live recordings, reveals Ralph Wadephul as a talented writer and musician.
