Caught Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever at Manchester a couple of weeks back. Top tunes and all played with real energy and bravura. Made me want to throw a TV out of a 9th floor hotel room (probably not quite the same, satisfying experience in these days of flat screens though).

UK Subs & Angelic Upstarts
Riverside, Newcastle

Subs on at 7.45...no time for 'prinks'. Charlie says "we're rockin' tonight, cos we're not pissed yet". Full house of baldies, greys, a few mohicans and several teenagers who have either been dragged along by one of the aforementioned, or are just uber-cool ;) . With a 26 album career to pick from (Missy may be interested to know that each album title starts with the following letter of the alphabet), I've got my dancin' boots on for 'Party In Paris', 'Stranglehold' and 'Warhead'. The bairns give as good as they get in the mosh. I can't match their fitness levels, but, like an ageing professional footballer now playing non-league, my greater experience ensures I never go arse over tit. For the encore, Charlie tells his kids on the balcony to cover their ears during a sing-a-long version of 'Hey, Santa, you c*nt! Where's my fucking bike?'

There's always an edge to an Upstarts gig. Main-man 'Mensi' is, arguably, Sunderland's biggest, loudest, most aggressive 60 year old bootboy and he's on in the middle of 'The Toon'...he greets a few chants of "We hate Sun'lan" and "Mensi is a wanker" with the suggestion that "any of you sad fucks who want to get up here will get your second beating of the day"...then kicks into an extra fast 'Two Million Voices'. Around 10 years ago, Mensi was struggling to get through gigs but he seems to have rediscovered all his old devilment...when he stares through the crowd with those mad eyes during the intro to 'Police Oppression', all that's missing from the first time I saw them in 1980 is that he's not kicking a dead pig's head around the stage. Several more of my old favourites get a run out; 'Last Night Another Soldier', 'Leave Me Alone', 'Woman In Disguise', 'You're Nicked', plus a few new(ish) chant-alongs; 'Anti-Nazi' and 'Bring Back Hunting - Give The Fox A Gun'...and everyone 'joins arms' for a tight and hard rendition of the immense 'Solidarity'...

As the polish workers fight to make their stand
And behind them every honest working man
In unity there's each other and your friend becomes your brother
And in the tyrant's heart will be a lesson learned

Give them hope give them strength give them life
Like a candle burning in the black of night
We are with you in our hearts and in our minds
And we'll pray for a nation through its darkest time

Mensi's 11 year old son joins the band onstage for 'The Murder Of Liddle Towers' and the lights go up, straight after...an hour later, the venue will be a foam party for 17 year old Geordie Shore wannabes. Deep-fried burger, chips and curry sauce, then home in time for Match Of The Day and a can of Courage Directors. It's a funny old game, Gary...

Was lucky enough to get a ticket late on for Def Leppard at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena last night. Have seen them a few times but this was the best, performing Hysteria in its entirety with a good stage show. Cheap Trick were superb in support, including The Flame in the set list. Saw them the last time they were in town over thirty years ago supporting Motely Crue.

The sound at this venue was slagged off in a recent post on WAM. There was nothing wrong with it last night. Think it depends on who is at the mixing desk and previous experience of the venue.

Saw Thunder last night. It was a very different Thunder, mellow sit down renderings of their most popular songs without power chords and with minimal electric guitar. It was a good evening and showed the quality of Danny Bowes' voice. Strange to leave without my ears ringing.

Woody Woodmansy is sadly the only surviving member of the Spiders From Mars. His band Holy Holy were endorsed by Bowie shortly before his death. Tony Visconti, who played bass on the Man who sold the world album, is on bass. The set was the Man who sold the world and Ziggy Stardust albums in full with an encore including Life on Mars and Rebel Rebel. The vocalist was from Heaven 17. Although sounding nothing like Bowie he did I good job, even though I know all of the lyrics better. Tony Visconti's daughter is in the band and sang lead vocal on Lady Stardust. It was a great night and the Tramshed was packed. The songs are timeless and as a hard rock album The man who sold the world stands comparison with the best.

Nils frahm at the albert in manchester last night. just one man, 10 keyboards and plenty of tape loops. Great sound in the building, it was packed and he played a solid two hours + set of his curious mix of electronica, nouveau classical and pastoral synth jazz.
