Unsung Heroes

Who are your unsung musical heroes?

I'm looking for the people you think are absolutely amazing, who appear to be in it for the music (not the money) and have a discography approaching that of John Mayall (more than 70; will there be an album this year?).

My offering: Roger Chapman. He first came to my attention in Family, who were one of those groups in the music explosion of the British 60s when everything got thrown into a big musical melting pot. True, a lot of what came out was not very good, but this was one of the good ones. I liked Family. I was vaguely aware of Streetwalkers, but Chappo came back into my musical life with his LP Mango Crazy (Exposure Records!!!) which really stood out in days of pretty lacklustre recording and production. Then again at a Bradford Festival: after a decent support act, he came on with his band about 9 and played a set until 10:30. Wonderful, everyone called for more. They came back on, and played til 12. Quality stuff. Everyone cheered again. So they came back on and played till 1am. Al the way through, Chappo had a glass of beer in his hand which he variously swigged or waved in the air. I saw him afterwards to get his - and the bands - autograph). He said, 'I think I'm a bit pissed'. Is this the Ken Dodd of the music business?

Apart from the albums, the only other viewing was a disappointing appearance on a Jules Holland show when they had him sing 'House of the Risihg Sun'

He brought a live album out last year: 'Maybe the last time'. I sincerely hope not.

Jussi Björling, died far too young, just when his voice was at its best, also he recorded in the late 50's in the golden age of really musical recording. Compared with the over hyped and often overweight modern tenors this man was giant of subtlety and emotional interpretation.
