About as far from Jessye Norman as it's possible to get, but no less sad, is the loss of Barrie Masters, lead singer, and the only permanent member of Eddie And The Hot Rods, since 1975.

I moved to Southend a few years after their Kursaal heyday...saw Barrie a year or so ago, guesting on a Damned encore of 'Do Anything you Wanna Do'

OBIT
Another bit of my musical youth gone. I think The Cream Live at the Philmore (the live album bit of Wheels of Fire) was the third album I ever bought. (Couldn't afford the double album and never did get the studio album you could by either as a single or the double album at the time.) I note that the review talks about Cream as a Rock Band. I seem to remember at the time that they were part of a Progressive movement (along with Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and lots of others) which was a reaction against 'Pop'. That's what I remember for the NME and Melody Maker at the time. The category subsequently transferred to bands like Yes and Genesis and came to stand for complicated, classically influenced music. (imho anyway). Never saw Cream but I did see Ginger Baker's Airforce. Can't remember too much about the music but I do remember hoping that Diane Stewart (or was it one of the others vocalists) would have a wardrobe malfunction as she'd had in a gig a few weeks before. Such is youth

With the loss of every icon it seems that my youth is becomming more and more distant.
