I've just found out that Neal Casal has passed away, aged 50, and I understand that he took his own life.
Neal was a huge talent who, apart from his solo career played with The Chris Robinson Band, Phil Lesh, Ryan Adams' Cardinals, and many, many more. He started out in a Florida band you may remember, called Blackfoot. The world has lost a gentle man, and a gifted musician. R.I.P. Neal.

I was at a gig yesterday evening when the support act, Leslie Stevens, announced that Neal Casal was no longer with us, her guitarist had played with Neal at the same venue many years ago. Clearly news to most of the audience by their reaction including my own. I'd seen Neal a couple of times once with his own band and latterly with Ryan Adams. A very underrated guitarist and songwriter, sad news to hear.

I used to like Blackfoot. Saw them at Donington in the 80s. If he was in the band then he would have been very young.

He'd have been 19 or 20, He joined them in '89 I think.

Jimmy Johnson, the guitarist for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (a.k.a. “the Swampers”) whose foundational R&B-based playing could be heard on hundreds of records, including iconic hits by Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett and Lynyrd Skynyrd, died at the age of 76. His death was confirmed by his son Jay Johnson, who did not reveal a cause of death. “He is gone,” his son wrote on Facebook. “Playing music with the angels now.”

“The mighty Jimmy Johnson has passed,” Jason Isbell, who grew up in the Shoals area, said on Twitter. “A lot of my favorite music wouldn’t exist without him.”

Check out his Wikipedia entry for a list of the songs and albums he played on, it's incredible.
