I was sad to hear of the passing of Richie Havens yesterday. I saw him live in '72 and he was superb, as was his appearance at Woodstock.

Time to go out and buy the Daft Punk Album on Vinyl - although I don't know how long Georgio Moroder has in him.

Iain Banks - Ok, not a musician to the best of my knowledge.
But he did write two of my favorite novels....(Feersum Endjinn & The Wasp Factory).
RIP.

I'll second and third that.

Jammy just seen your homage to Iain Banks - that man had soul, a very dark soul. Personal favourite 'Use of Weapons'.

Mick Farren is dead! Not a 'famous' name I know, unless you were into the 70's counterculture scene. Mick was the leader of a bunch of freaks who took over the TV studio while David Frost was interviewing Jerry Rubin (look it up, it's famous). He was also editor of I.T. (International Times) and leader of the British wing of the White Panthers. He was also one of the silly buggers who attempted (and pretty much succeeded) to 'liberate' the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.
On top of all this Mick fronted his own band, The Deviants, whose subversive songs reflected his own personality. He represented himself at The Old Bailey when an 'adult comic,' of which he was co-publisher, faced an obscenity charge. And despite a heroic appetite for drink and drugs he managed to find time to author 36 books and have a career as a journalist, writing for New Musical Express, Village Voice and LA Reader amongst others.

In 2010 Farren returned to Britain from America, and settled on the South Coast where he continued to write. Against medical advice, he performed occasionally with The Deviants, though he often had to sit down and breathe from an oxygen tank between numbers. He collapsed and died as the band was playing Cocaine & Gunpowder at The Borderline in Soho.

I'd like to think that if he'd chosen a way to go, that was it.

Sadly, George Duke passed a couple of days ago. He'll be a familiar name to Frank Zappa fans, whose albums he graced sixteen times, and also to fans of funky keyboard playing everywhere. His incredible career is detailed below.
