I confess to having a weakness for metal bands fronted by powerhouse lady vocalists and Evanescence kept blipping on my musical radar - so finally I have got around to listening to some of their albums.

Image

Evanescence came out of nowhere in 2003 with 'Fallen' - a mix of crunchy metal tracks and Kate-Bush-styled whimsy. Eye-catching Goth princess Amy Lee was the singer and made a big impression with her classically-trained voice.

Other albums followed like 'Open Door' and 'Evanescence' (recommended), where the direction continued despite regular changes in the bands lineup and Amy remaining the only constant factor. In general the music stays within the Symphonic Metal genre but increases in sophistication with more classical and electronic elements being added. Also Amy can write a good tune.

For those familiar with Nightwish and Within Temptation - this band stands right alongside them.

In 2017 'Synthesis' was released - here Evanescence shakes off its metal roots and becomes solely about Amy and her Classical ambitions (she dreamed as a child of becoming a famous composer). The music is now orchestrally-based with electronics for atmosphere and the occasional break back into rock-territory. Amy sings more operatically here and her voice has grown fuller and richer through the years. The album is intriguing and entertaining - full of twists and turns that keep you listening.

Evanescence - Synthesis (Full Album) ***High Quality***

Evanescence toured in 2018 with a full orchestra to present 'Synthesis Live' and this is a very worthwhile accompaniment to the studio version. Amy sings with passion and conviction over an excellently recorded backing - with electronic effects providing extra drama over the orchestra.

Here's a taster of the live DVD, if you like this you will love the rest.
