Re: Your last listen

Just got this and it's a melancholic, nostalgic trip back to being 17 and miserable - but this band shone as a dim candle in the darkness:

Joy Division - 'The Best of'.

Image

Why bother with this when I've just got hold of the remastered sets of 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer' ? A couple of reasons:
1) it was cheap (thanks Dodax)
2) it has crisp, improved SQ on the non-album singles 'Transmission', 'Atmosphere' and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. (Stunning!)
3) there is a bonus disc with all JD's BBC radio Peel Session tracks (I only had a cassette of this) also perfectly remastered.

Still in heavy JD mode with the expanded editions of the first 3 New Order albums also coming soon. The difference that the newer versions makes is pronounced, far more of Martin Hannett's subtle studio effects are audible (and he loved his effects). Steven Morris metronomic drumming is shown up in sharp relief and reveals an emerging talent for rhythmic variation. Barney and Hooky are still learning how to play as they go along - but you are aware of their determination to make great music. And Ian Curtis - a genius with lyrics and a unique performer who never got to where he should have gone to.

bedhead - Ryan Adams. A 338 track live outtakes compilation. I think it'll end up sub 120 tracks.

It was good that they went out on a high note. Snakes and arrows is also a very strong album.

It is strange how one's tastes shift through time. Recently I have fallen for an album that I found dull as ditchwater when it was released.

'Smile's OK' by The Hope Blister.

Image

Probably unfamiliar to most - but this is a continuation of the 'This Mortal Coil' project run by 4AD boss Ivo Watts-Russell and producer John Fryer. TMC made 3 astonishing albums and had a rotating cast of players and singers culled from the label's roster of acts like: The Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and The Wolfgang Press.

The idea behind This Mortal Coil was to re-invent songs from the likes of Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, Van Morrison, etc. for the 'modern age' and pour a tasteful sauce of atmospheric wistfulness over everything. Simply gorgeous is an understatement.

With 'Hope Blister', Ivo tried to distill this concept into a band based around singer Louise Rutkowski, bassist Lawrence O'Keefe and string arranger Audrey Riley. The resulting album is more stripped-down and delicate than TMC but retains the otherwordly sharpness that pierces through to the emotional core of each song and lays it bare.

The Hope Blister - Let The Happiness In
The Hope Blister - Only Human
This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
This Mortal Coil - Morning Glory
