After discovering the phenomenal 'Ambient Metal' sound of TesseracT last year I have been hoping to hear more bands who make music in a similar vein. The trouble with a lot of the current wave of metal bands is the proliferation of grunt/scream vocalists which really puts me off, I find that sound very annoying. The only person who, in my book, ever did it well was Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth - and even he stopped doing it.

So here are a couple of excellent new(ish) bands featuring powerful rhythms, intricate guitar work, good songs and fine production:

The Contortionist 'Language' - an American band who do (occasionally) use grunt vocals for effect. Some really tasteful ambient touches here.

Another US act, In The Silence 'A Fair Dream Gone Mad' has a powerful riff-based sound with strong vocals from singer Josh Burke. Silghtly Goth-rock sound.

From Australia come Karnivool with their second album 'Sound Awake'. A tsunami of sound that will carry you away. Immersive stuff that bites like a hammerhead shark! Approach with care.

Sheryl Crow self titled album from 1996. If she ain't fit i don't know what is. Saw her play in Manchester a few years ago. Even though she was no spring chicken there was a pool of drool where i was stood. music is cracking too.

Some cracking tunes on this but the singles are not my favorites. Globe sessions is probably the ultimate Sheryl Crow album, going to put that on next.
