NAS update issue

Unread post by CN211276 »

I have a WD Cloud storage device and for some time have been bombarded with messages from the company about a need to update. The messages read like War and peace and make little sense to me. Communication with the company has been a nightmare because they take ages to respond and seem to think I am an IT expert. To cut a long story short I finally established that I can't update my device because it is too old. They say that as a result I will 'only be able to access content locally from 15 April 2022'. I do not know what they mean by this and am concerned that my storage device could be obsolete. At present I can store content via the web on my desktop and access it even if I am not home. If this continues I will not be affected by not being able to update. If not I will have to get another storage device. I am sure I will get a more informed response here than from WD.

Accessing locally means you can still look at the files on your NAS from your own home wired and wireless network - but not from an outside location via internet.

Might not be a problem.

Thanks, not much of a problem as I still have Qobuz when/if away. I sometimes played ripped CDs when we were away for long periods prior to Covid. I presume I will still be able to store files as I do now.

For in-house usage things should remain just as they are.

Looking back it did come as a bit of a shock when I found I could play ripped CDs on holiday.

I have a old WD NAS, likewise the remote access / cloud feature is being turned off. You need to logout (as per the email instructions) and the drive will continue to work playing music on your local / home network.

Mine is very old now and surprised it’s even still running, about 15 years old now and the hard drive is still he original so it only a matter of time before it dies anyway. I just keep music on it for playback but have several copies of my music elsewhere.

Mine is around seven years old and I have everything backed up. I store photos and documents as well as music.
