I think I got off lightly being cured of the bug for thirty years after hearing the LP12 and not being taken in by the flat earth . As has been said it is all about the music and for many years this modest system provided me with a lot of enjoyment:
Rega Planar 3, which I still have
NAD 3020
Heybrooks HB 1s
Denon cassette deck
Yamaha CD player
Sony Walkman
Total cost, around £800.

I still have an old pair of Mission 70s. They are lots of fun. And great candidates for Doc Mods as they are not ported and come apart in two halves.TheMadMick wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 8:42 am Let's face it folks, it's not how much it costs that counts but how much you enjoy it.
I've used a Denon DM38 with a pair of Mission 70's wired with DNM speaker cable and it was really enjoyable.

Re: How much did your system cost ?
Just tallied it up because i started thinking about it.
Pass b1 £50
Pass f5 £300
Speakers £300 ish
Delta 170.3 cd transport £220
Topping dac £100
Jvc ql-y5f £120
Jbe series 3 £250
Benedict audio hothead £300
At33sa £360
Vm760slc £250
Air bearing arm and pump £450
Sony tc377 reel to reel £300 after fixing it
Switch box £50 in parts
Cables about £100 although i did make most of them myself
Total for that system is about £3150
My upstairs headphone system is a little cheaper,
Nva a20 and p20 £150
Audio technica electret cans £90
Cd371 £50
So that one is £290
Im not counting all the other bits im not using. there are another 6 tts, a couple of pa amps, a marantz reciever and tape deck, a load of drivers, a few arms and carts, some mission speakers, a couple of cd players and my broken cole lcr phono stage.
Theres probably another two grand plus at least in there at current used prices.
I reckon theres somewhere in the region of 6 grands worth of stuff in the house which is quite frankly obscene, i shudder to think what the cost would have been if id bought i new, theres over 2 grand in carts alone at new prices.
Good god........

Don't worry Ant, some spend more than £6K on one item £3150 for your main system doesn't sound over the top to me.Vinyl-ant wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 12:36 pm Just tallied it up because i started thinking about it.

Re: How much did your system cost ?
My system is in my sig. The "big bits" were bought new in 2011 if I'm remembering correctly. I know the DAC was £299, and the speakers would have been around the £425-£450 mark. The CD player was also £299, and I think the TT was £325-ish.
The DAB tuner was used and cost me around £60 or £70 I think.
The Gram Amp and headphone amp were also sourced used, along with the Grados, and I don't remember what they cost me.
The AT ATH-M50s were £75.00
I don't remember how much the NVA amps and cables came to in 2011.
So, not a clue really.

Re: How much did your system cost ?
My hifi cost considerably less as I built it myself.
There isn't anything I swap it for if I had limitless funds. Although I'd buy a few arms and cartridges to prove there isn't much between models.
