There is a thread on pfm by a guy with a £100K system who wants to downgrade to something smaller, cheaper and easier to use.

Current system cost:
Turntable/arm/cart - £500
DIY valve amp parts cost - £450
DIY speakers parts costs - £400
AppleTV streamer - £70, Apple Music subscription - £9.99pm
Musical Fidelity M1 DAC - £400
Tangent CDII - £150

Total £1970 + the AM monthly subscription.

Costs over lifetime, before, and during the flat earth bollocks phase, then getting out of it, then getting into DIY, then building loads of nondescript meh! before settling on what I have:

I’d rather not think about it. £30000 is a conservative estimate.

Let's face it folks, it's not how much it costs that counts but how much you enjoy it.

I've used a Denon DM38 with a pair of Mission 70's wired with DNM speaker cable and it was really enjoyable.

For a long time I had a complete Mark Levinson system in use;
a rich friend had bought it but didn't like the sound, he got a Sony ES tower and was happier with that. Knowing I was a hifi-nut he said I could use it and it sat in my 'business side' for several years, used mainly for disco's and BGM. I didn't like the sound either, finding it cold and clinical, and stuck with my modest NVA for personal use.

The ML system: CD Transport, DAC, Pre-amp, Power amp (stereo, size of a beer crate and weighed a ton) massive MIT Terminator cabling and some weird Swiss-made speakers. It must have been in the region of €100,000.

Unfortunately this friend had a severe and very expensive cocaine habit and he eventually reclaimed the setup to pay for that. I won't tell you how it ended for him but it was sad.

What a waste.

My no.2 system over here in Cambodia has cost me approx £1250, and for that I'm extremely happy. I have purchased a few pre amp tubes to try, which are not included since I have yet to hear them. The cost of my main system in the uk with vinyl and cd sources has just surprised me, roughly £4.5k, although to start with, the sale of an LP12 for £2,600 really helped.

Agreed. That was not something I was thinking about when I decided to start the thread. We can discuss cost vs enjoyment though. I have little to compare what I have with except a load of 90's olive Naim. The NVA inspired kit wipes the floor with that and would have been much cheaper.

I don't know if I would have come to the same conclusion 20 years ago (much testosterone flying about) when I was seduced by the "excitement" of the Naim stuff. I later realised half the music was missing  Found it now though - RD had boxed it up in black acrylic cases

Not a simple question, for several reasons.

1) My memory, I honestly cant remember what I actually paid for most things.

2) A lot of my kit is home made, and sometimes things are broken up and parts reused into new kit.

3) Things may be swapped, or traded making it difficult to value.

IF I sat down and worked out what my currently used kit, and all the spare parts and half completed projects were worth I might be very surprised. :o
