Sumiko Pearl is a good mm- I had one for a long time before needing upgrade- went to a Grado Prestige Gold and then Nagaoka Mp200- the mp200 is really good
Currently have an Ortofon mc with Ortofon step up into phono 1- takes a lot of beating -🎉

Goldring E3 at a shade under £100 is a much better cartridge than the Ortofon 2M Red. I fitted one to my nephews Project Debut turntable and it’s a great compliance and sonic match. Highly recommended based on that experience.

Looking hard at Goldring cartridges and hopefully an example will be heading my way, sometime in the not-too-distant future.

Yes, will get that sorted, but that particular Goldring is more of an example of the Nagaoka sound than the Goldring sound...

Someone gives the E1 a good write up as well, nearly half the price although the E3 is probably worth the extra.
Alternatively cut the end off a 6" nail, (the sharp end) simply tape onto the head shell, and you've got a working Project.

Looking around on the web for vintage turntables and there are some around at not-too-ridiculous prices. There seem to be several shops in The Netherlands that refurbish old TT's and have them for sale. Currently have a bid in for one in an online auction.

There is an old belt-drive Akai TT in the attic with a knackered interconnect. I have borrowed the heavy rubber mat from that and put it on the Pro-Ject Debut, it has improved the definition a bit. Also took the belt off and cleaned it with Isopropyl - again a slight improvement in flutter.

Listening critically to this deck has made me aware of its shortcomings; it is a fine backup deck, good for a 'starter audiophile' but it is certainly not a TT that will satisfy for serious or critical listening.

Anybody know this direct drive deck? Marlux MX-86. Looks nice.
