First serious hifi

What to call serious hi fi? When I was 11 I got a Zenith Allegro all in one for a stereo system. I listened to a lot of music on that.

At the age of 13 I started to piece together a stereo system with birthday, Christmas, and yard mowing monies. A Pioneer SX 2400 reciever, a Realisitc turntable of some sort, a Sanyo cassette deck, and these large floorstanding speakers from a surplus sale.

When I was 19 I started buying my first serious stereo system.

Amber Audio 17B pre amp
Dynaco Stereo 70 tube amp (you could buy them dirt cheap in the late 80s!)
Systemdeck IIKE turntable with Audioquest Alchemist IIIs high output moving coil cartridge
Tandberg TCD 310 cassette deck
Spica TC 50 speakers with their matching Servo subwoofer

Looking back it was a decent stereo for a college kid. I bought much of it used or on close out.

Those are interesting speakers for a 19 year old. I have been intrigued by Spica speakers and would love to hear some but that will probably never happen.

Found my first speakers - Wharfedald Delta 30. Can't remember much about them apart from a gave them to a chick in the village hoping she would invite me to her bedroom for a listen a hopefully something else. Never happened

Celestial Ditton are all the rage these days aren't they (on lesser forums) ?

I replaced them with Harbeth HB 1s in 1983. They sounded a lot better and remained in the system for 18 years.

I then changed to a nad c340 amp and some linn index 2 speakers that i inherited, same cd player.

Then a musical fidelity a3 amp and x ray cd player, linn lp12, and some kef q55s i inherited.

Then changed the speakers to some quad 11l speakers.

Since then there is too much stuff to go through.
Some highlights have been a yamaha pf800, a lovely lovely rotel ra211 amp, only 10 wpc but so sweet, the benedict audio hothead phono stage which i still have now, and my jbe dd. I don't count the stuff ive made.

That first system was a cracker, the mf system was nice enough with the quads but not worth being in hock for.

Currently, the amplification is all nelson pass and will stay until it blows up. The tts get swapped out all the time because im constantly faffing for the fun of doing so, the cd is the delta 170.3 transport and topping e30 which i am very happy with so they will stay until they blow up. The speakers will also stay until they blow up.
The r2r is also there for the fun of it. I like to bugger about with analogue.

I might be one of the only people who is actually happy with their lot

I was a late comer to the world of seperates and it was only in 1996 that I went to Swift Audio in Wilmslow and bought myself (if memory serves me right)

Marantz CD63
TEAC cassette deck
Marantz tuner
Kenwood or Goodmans turntable
Mordaunt Short MS20 Pearl speakers
Target stands

That system sounded bloody good to me and served me well for over 10 years until I started going on HiFi forums and then the box swapping started .
