Well if you could and I know its hard, choose your top five albums, not singles what would you choose.
For me would be crime of the century Supertramp , crosswinds Billy Cobham ,Talking book Stevie wonder, From nothingness to eternity mahavishnu orchrestra and any Little feat album you might care to name :epopc:

My problem with this question is that over the years I have found music that I once enjoyed becomes stale in some respects. Then I hear something that I have not heard for many years and wonder why when I have the album. So any list of "favourites" could just as easily be "out of favourites".

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Steeleye Span - Below the Salt
Lindisfarn - Fog on the Tyne
Eagles - Hotel California

Maybe not be the 5 'best' albums I own, but they are 5 of the most pivotal, for me...

Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks... first heard this at 11 year old, in my pen friend's bedroom in Denmark, while supping my first ever beer. From this I soon went onto The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned, Siouxsie, Stranglers, Ruts, The Slits, Dead Kennedys, Angelic Upstarts...

Crass - Stations of the Crass... the band that taught me about personal authority and responsibility. A massive influence on my world view.

The Nightingales - Pigs On Purpose... my bridge from punk to indie. From here I found The Smiths, Gang of Four, The Raincoats, AuPairs, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group, Half Man Half Biscuit, Xmal Deutschland, The Birthday Party, Virgin Prunes, The Pogues, The Men They Couldn't Hang...

The Family Cat - Tell 'Em We're Surfin'...getting to gigs fell off a bit after I moved to Southend. Went to see these indie kids in the back room of the Blue Boar at Prittlewell (supported by the New Fast Automatic Daffodils!)and fell in with a crowd to go to see bands and hang out with. Saw 'The Cat' around 30 times in the end. From here I found The Pixies, The Wedding Present, Ride, Carter USM, Sleater Kinney, Mudhoney, PJ Harvey...

Johnny Cash - San Quentin... an amazing album, for so many reasons. Led me to Dolly, Willie, Waylon, Emmylou and scores more.

Really, really difficult. Any list I make would be heavily slanted towards my current listening. The last 3 months have seen me slide from Nordic Jazz through Synthesiser maestros to classic Prog-Rock.

Going back to albums that had a formative effect on my later tastes:

Judie Tzuke 'Shoot the Moon'
Supertramp 'Crisis? What Crisis?'
The Cure 'Seventeen Seconds'
Joni Michell 'Miles of Aisles'
Klaus Schulze '...live...'

I think I would really need a Top 50 to make any sense of this.

I could answer this question differently every day of my life, depending on how I feel that day.

Today’s top 5.
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette.
BC Camplight - Shortly After Takeoff
George Michael - Listen Without Prejudice
Eddie Cochran - Singin’ to my baby
Van Halen - Van Halen.

I’m always listening to music. Even when music is off, music is running through my head constantly. It narrates my life, and the sound-track changes daily.
