System warm up

Unread post by CN211276 »

My system sounds a lot better after music has been playing for around forty minutes. I sounds good from the off, but when warmed up the difference is very noticable, taking the form of greater depth, seperation and bass definition. The difference has been more pronounced since I hsve been using the direct input on the P90SA and removed filtering above 20kHz on th Qutest. The NVA, Chord kit, switch and router remain on 24/7, only the microRendu is switched off when not in use. In contrast the far simpler second system does not seem to require warming up althogh the Topping E30 (power bank PS) does not remain on stand by, the A20 does.

I would be interested in others experiences concerning system warm up. It seems that there is a big difference between equipment being on stand by and playing music.

The only device in my main setup that I switch off when not in use is the PC/streamer.

The DAC sounds a bit brittle when it is cold and the NVA A40 power amps really need at least 4 hours on to get to their optimum performance

Upstairs:
Vinyl
Pro-Ject 1.2 + Grado Sig Jr + Cambridge Alva Duo
DigiVolumio PC + Kiss DP-500 + Sabaj A20d
NVA: Cube2 - SSP - LS6+ Sabaj A10a {x2)
Little Bear MC2 + AQ NightHawk
Downstairs:

The streamer is the only device on my main system which is switched off.

4 hours is a long time. Glad it is under an hour with me but there is quite a difference, especially since I have been using the direct input.

I remember a visit to NVA towers and an integrated amp was sounding a bit “flabby” ie the bass was not quite right. The Doc assured me that the amp was cold and after 30 minutes it started to sound a lot more like people playing musical instruments.

I leave my NVA on 24/7 unless it needs to be powered down.

Leave NVA amps powered on continuously. They draw very little power at idle.

It would take me a long, long time to warm to Guns 'n' Roses, though ;)

I turn everything off that can be turned off when not in use, why would you leave things on when you arent using them?
The f5 warms up quickly enough, so does everything else.
I find it abit silly to leave things on for the sake of half an hours warm up
I dont relish the possibility of something going pop in the middle of the night and waking up dead from smoke inhalation.
Sorry, its one of those hifi things i simply dont get

I always turn everything off overnight. It gives me nightmares thinking I could be woken up by a smoke alarm going off.

I reckon an hour is long enough for warm up.

I've always left solid state equipment powered up continuously - except when going on holiday. I do, myself, go pop during the night but that is related to age and real ale.

There is no danger of NVA amps catching fire. Power draw is very low, and in the ultra rare event of a massive power surge (such as a direct lightning strike) then the amplifier board acts as a fuse. Even if the transformer overheated it would close itself down.
