Help with phono stage

Unread post by Ordinaryman »

Having just purchased a Ap30 which i hope arrives Tuesday  I dug out a project phono box to use with it for the mean time. shock horror giant amount of hum when plugged into my current amp, by passing its own phono stage. yes connected the earth etc think its fkd. Question is as my main source is vinyl any ideas for an interim phono stage until I've listened to the amp for a while at not to greater cost?

Move the phono stage around. See if the hum changes. Hold the phono leads from the turntable between your fingers. Any improvement?

I bought a phono 2 and had the same Hum problem as Ordinaryman. The Doc advised me to “shuffle the pack” and after rearranging the location of the amp the problem went away. I’ll second Sav’s advice.

I like MM carts. Currently using a Nagaoka MP500, fantastic.

I’ve tried many many different phono stages, including the Project Phono. It was noisy, didn’t like it.

My favourite of the lot is the humble Schiit Mani. Its fantastic, incredible value for money.

For transparency, never tried an NVA phono stage, but will get one to try at some point in the future.

The Schiit Mani is excellent for MM carts, but not so good for MC. So. I’d look elsewhere if you like MC carts.

Thanks chaps  ,moved the phono around and buzz disappeared seems it was too close to turntable/amp  . the project phono was purchased as a stop gap when one of my other amps phono section failed and was only used for 2/3weeks and at that time every thing was positioned differently. Also thanks on the heads up on the schitt will probably get one once I've run the little ap30 for a while and see what i think.

Thanks latteman, not a great forum seeker for stuff but from info here and a quick look at some reviews, seems it might be the way to go. Assuming i can buy one. so far they seem to be" out of stock" wherever i have looked. For the moment ill use the project as and when the ap30 arrives. Looking forward to see how it sounds with my cubetts , ssc and ls1. cant wait :epopc:

With regards to ordering A Schiit Mani, just order of the USA website. You just have to specify UK 240v plug in the drop down menu.
It will most likely get hit for import tax on the way into the country, but won’t be much, and is still an incredible bargain.
