It's impossible to know.

They way they were propelled wasn't there only difference. You can't isolate only 1 variable.

Unfortunately not. Never mind someone will do a PhD thesis on it one day.

I wonder if it’s anything to do with torque.
Direct drive is way more torquey than delivery through a narrow silicon/rubber band.

I’m guessing that’s why people often claim improvements by moving to a dual belt system.

Just a thought....
Modded Belles A150 MK2, P90SA, & NVA SSP cables, and LS5.
Leak Stereo 20 & First Audio Classic Copper V2
Modded Lenco GL75 with Saturn arm, heavy custom plinth. Nagaoka MP500.
Nottingham Audio Hyperspace + heavy kit, + Origin Live Conqueror + Koetsu Black
Tom Evans Micro Grove MK2 MC phono
Bluesound Node2i (x2) both with latest power upgrades.
Topping D90MQA and Topping D90SE
Audiolab 6000 CDT transport.
All NVA cables

Possibly, but an idler drive also has limits on torque. What is different is that a drive belt is under tension and thus relatively easily excited and may this allow that energy back to the stylus. Even though this energy may well be at a frequency below, or above, the range of human hearing it still gets amplified and all that goes with that. An idler is under compression and, obviously, a direct drive has neither.
