What's your opinion on room correction?

My general opinion on room correction is that:

It's essential. It's not really high fidelity unless you have room correction.

It's very useful. It's the best addition to the world of hi-fi in the last 20 years.

It's good, if you can afford it.

It depends. Some rooms and systems benefit from it. For others it's not worth bothering with.

Live music is much underrated and many a Hi-Fi enthusiast would be well advised to skip their planned upgrade and spend the money on going to a few concerts or festivals instead.
Agreed, but it could be some time in the present circumstances. I have spent over £200 on tickets for gigs at four different local venues which have been cancelled. The earliest reschedule is October and I suepect that will be too soon.

I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head, any reproduced music is only ever an approximation of the live sound, however good the system. Any recording will include the colouration of the space in which it was recorded. This will then be further coloured by the room in which it is reproduced. Short of recording the music in your own listening room, there isn't much that can be done about that.

But there are degrees of approximation, extents of compromise.
Isn't "How much approximation and compromise can be tolerated?" a question that better reflects reality for the individual who is pursuing a 'live sound'?
Presumably one doesn't just give up because perfection is impossible.

(I've been in bands too. Snare drums are 120dB at 1m and many other instruments must be amplified to compete. Speaking simply from a personal point of view I'm not looking for that sound in my own living room. So I may not be the best to engage on that specific point. I absolutely accept that the dynamics one experiences from live instruments is fantastic in a gig context.)

It isn't a case of giving up, it is a case of accepting that more expenditure isn't going to solve anything and being content. As you say a compromise but one I have decided to accept because, ultimately, it is all about enjoying the music and ignoring the limitations. Yes shifting the speakers and furniture may make a difference but I'm not upgrading my hardware or buying a DSP system.

Knowing there are limits and regular exposure to good recordings means that I appreciate live music more because I listen differently when I know a piece well. Of course the whole thing becomes academic if one uses a headset!

I have a chap local to me that I got to know through number 2 child’s rugby playing exploits.

He is an all Linn man and has Sound Optimisation on his system. While it can effectively remove all boom and unwanted resonance, I found that it robbed some emotion and flow from the music. It somehow sounded incomplete. Difficult to be completely objective though as his system is not to my taste.

I would rather match the speakers and system to the room the traditional way. Thanks
