I have been looking at the Cisco on line manuals and think I would be able to set up one of there switches, IP addresses being the crux. There are so many on ebay I am at a bit of a loss as the adverts do not provide information on Gbps and they are not all suitable. I would want a fanless one ideally with 8 ports, but these seem to be more expensive. Grateful for any suggestions.Lindsayt wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 1:09 am My understanding is that the Meraki switch will work just fine on the default settings.
However if you want to "manage" it, you need a license or someone with a license to manage it on your behalf, or allow you to use their management computer to manage it.
https://www.comms-express.com/products/ ... p-license/
I hate subsription based computing in all forms. This is just another example of this.
My advice: don't buy the Meraki switch. It's only a switch for "small sites". And the subscription based management license is the nail in the coffin.
If you were to buy a switch would it have to be fanless or would fanned be OK?
How many devices would you be looking to connect to it?
Would you want it all to be part of one logical network? Or would it be better if you could split your home network into 2 or more logical sections? EG you have a lodger and don't want him hacking into your banking details on your home PC?
Would you like to try fibre connections? Possibly at some time in the future?
Would you like to try 10 Gbps connections, so that the bottleneck would be shifted to how quickly your hard drives can work?
Edit, for about £50, I personally would take this fanless 8 port switch over the Meraki. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CISCO-Cataly ... Sw2O1d~92i
BTW, the letters in Cisco model numbers are very important in deciding what's worth buying.
For example, this WS-C2960-8TC-L is junk because the max port speed is only 0.1 Gbps https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cisco-2960-8 ... SwJb9Wsp3J
Wheras the WS-C2960G-8TC-L I linked to above is an OK deal because all the ports will do 1 Gbps.
In this example it's the G in the model number that makes all the difference.

Re: It's so Ethereal
Would a 1 Gbps speed be OK for you?
Or would you want 10 Gbps?
Would you want the option to take SFP adaptors, so that you could try a fibre connection?
Would you be open to having an HP switch intead of a Cisco?

Re: It's so Ethereal
I would want a higher Gbps if it is likely to be of benefit.
I would also be open to SFP adaptors and a HP switch as long as the device is compact.

Re: It's so Ethereal
We do not have a full understanding of how all kinds of "muck" degrades the digital signal. We can only go by what our ears tell us. I for one detected a huge improvement when I started streaming from a dedicated streamer instead of a PC. Devices and cables referred to on threads have also resulted in improvements witnessed by myself and other forum members. What goes on before the signal reaches the DAC is a major problem for objectivists and the gospel of ASR.Hemmo1969 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 7:45 pmI’m in the dark but how do you qualify such a statement?CN211276 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 3:58 pmHis measuring equipment has been left behind by technolgy when it comes to kit like this.Hemmo1969 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 2:50 pm Interesting read here.....

Re: It's so Ethereal
There is a huge difference in the price of similar looking 8 port Cisco switches on Ebay. Could this be because one has a G in the model number and is better specified?

Re: It's so Ethereal
The 100 Mbit (0.1 Gbps) switch is older and has slower data transmission rates than the 1 Gbps switch with the "G" suffix.CN211276 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 10:21 am There is a huge difference in the price of similar looking 8 port Cisco switches on Ebay. At £155 the 1 Gbps switch is optimistically priced. I've seen the same model for about £50 on UK ebay. It might just take a bit of patience to get you a Cisco 1 Gbps proper business fanless 8 port switch for £50ish.

Re: It's so Ethereal
I thought the price was very steep. They offered me and everyone else watching it a 5% discount. I wonder if audiophile interest in switches is bumping up the prices of ones suitable? I will keep my eyes open for something reasonably priced.Lindsayt wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 9:21 amThe 100 Mbit (0.1 Gbps) switch is older and has slower data transmission rates than the 1 Gbps switch with the "G" suffix.CN211276 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 10:21 am There is a huge difference in the price of similar looking 8 port Cisco switches on Ebay.
