It Lives !!

Unread post by zebbo »

I was lucky(?) enough to pick up Richard's battleship SONY CDP-X779es CD player a few months back. When I picked it up it had been partially stripped down as it had developed a fault. It was/is also somewhat cosmetically challenged with several bad scratches and other damage mainly to the, very substantial, top plate. The posh, shiny side cheeks were missing and rough MDF replacements had been fitted.
I carefully cleaned up everything inside, making sure all the connections were tight and clean. I managed to get it working for a while but then it started playing up, refusing to play discs although it would read the ToC instantly and without fail so the problem wasn't the laser. I had managed to find a specialist who sounded like he knew what he was doing so stripped out the transport mech complete and sent it to him in Germany. He confirmed that the laser was perfect but several other components required changing. He also fitted an upgraded motor and new belt for the drawer mechanism, all for 172 euro inc return post, result!
Having received the transport back I immediately set about refitting it into the player, plugged it in and switched it on........... nothing! Gutted! The motor would pulse a few times then quit.
Bayram, the technician was puzzled but said he would repair it again FOC if I send it back, which I did. Unfortunately, it turned out that I had somehow managed to fry the laser when I refitted the transport! (static maybe??). Anyway, he was able to fit a replacement laser for me and sent it back again - another 164 euro.
Got it back today and VERY CAREFULLY refitted it into the player, (I earthed myself as a precaution), and it has been happily playing all my favourite CD's all evening.
I've fitted some nice shiny black side cheeks and am waiting for the top plate to come back from the paint shop. So another piece of the Doc's past lives on, and very nice it is too! 8-)

Will get some pics posted later. I'm having the top painted matt black as there's no way to replicate the anodised original finish. There are a few scratches to the top of the fascia but the front is generally tidy.

Good work getting it fixed. Static is a real problem when messing about with cdp transports. I got an antistatic mat and wrist band which i connected to an earthed copper radiator pipe..

I'm glad you didn't do a Jammy and throw it in a skip.
