I had my eye on some monacor drivers to use as mids. Qts ideal for a closed box, smoothish high frequency tail off and more effecient than the ones i currently have.Alfi wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2019 6:58 pm Sealed boxes definitely my preference.
Currently using semi omni's. Home made from 18mm birch ply, built to the dims of Alinson 6's and inspired by the Doc's cubes, with upward radiating Monacor 8" carbon coned mid bass drivers and forward radiating Visaton G20 SC soft domes. Just love them!

There are some very good ported speakers. I still love the laid-back, enveloping character of my old Arcam One's and the crossover-less models from Diapason (Karis, Adamantes) have impressed me enormously.

I have no opinion whatsoever but in the true spirit of audio forums, I am not letting that stop me from posting something completely irrelevant in this thread. Cheese is delicious.

This is a good poll. I know whose advise to discount based on their answer. Well done for repeating it on pfm. Saved me hours of reading people's posts.

I don't like slimline ported speakers.
Ports are the devil's spawn.
Apart from a few very rare exceptions - where huge drivers are used.
What I think is interesting is that at my local hi-fi dealers, I struggle to spot any sealed box speakers. It's wall to wall slimline ported. And yet a good proportion of people on this forum and pfm prefer sealed box speakers.
It's a bit like the music business selling red and orange DR rating CD's when the majority of people on pfm would prefer dark green ones. I started a poll on that too: https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads ... er.232962/
There's a whole generation of audio equipment buyers that have been brought up thinking that ported must be superior, because that's what most speaker manufacturer's make.

Re: Ported or sealed box speakers. Which do you prefer?
I would dearly like to try a pair of large (very high quality) driver, sealed boxes but I'm limited by the size of the gap where my speakers have to be positioned between my chimney and vinyl rack - about 50cm. Luckily I like my Rega RX5's and (being a bass player) they do offer me the scale and presentation of bass I look for. That said, I wish my physical considerations didn't mitigate against sating my curiosity!
