Simple stream

Unread post by Ordinaryman »

Stupid is as stupid does, so I have a rega mira amp, cubetts, ls1, Samsung tablet and Lenovo laptop running windows 10. Would like to be able to listen to stuff on you tube, spend a bit of time there in the early hours. Looking for the simplest cost effective way of doing so. Not looking for ultimate quality just good listenable sound at low level. I'm sure someone's asked this already, but hey ho, any recommendations? Please bear in mind to technical and I'm lost! First foray into anything non vinyl or cd!

If you are not looking for ultimate quality, for convenience and simplicity the Arcam Mini Blink is a good option. Decent sound for Bluetooth. The cheap Chinese DAC with PS would sound better and cost less.

Not stupid at all, perfectly reasonable question.

I did same thing (from vinyl, cassettes and CDs to music from computer, then music from the net)

Simplest way would be to connect your tablet or laptop (line out or headphone out) directly to the amp with 3.5 jack to RCA stereo pair cable (but that's not streaming)
Simplest streaming setup that I use (and would recommend): Airport Express into Maplins DAC into amplifier, then stream Spotify from my iPhone to AE - sound quality is good
Chromecast Audio could be used instead, some people use it directly into amp (without DAC) but I have not tried this.

Try, see what way you fancy, have fun, enjoy music!
Current setup: Elex / Dynaudio

No. Much too complicated. Google Chromecast plus a bit of software may do the trick. You don't say what your streaming source is.

Have no streaming source at the moment, just spend a lot of time on youtube during the am via sumsung tablet or laptop. Don't sleep to good due to meds. Lots of time on daryls house and radio paradise, low levels, would just like to put it through some thing better than the tablet, laptop speakers

Streaming YouTube used to be possible with Raspberry Pi and Volumio but since Youtube introduced 'premium' this doesn't work. You can't cast from Youtube or Chrome app on an Android device to a ChromeCastAudio (but you can to a TV!). You can cast from a PC running Chrome and browsing to Youtube. (Confused yet?).
I still think a ChromeCast is easiest and cheapest.

Assuming that you have a wifi network, my solution

Chrome on Windows laptop browse to RadioParadise.com/player. Hit the cast button. (have a look at sources and see what you can cast).
Cast to Chromecast audio which is connected using 3.5mm jack to two RCA cable (a couple of quid off fleabay). Should cost you less than £30 and a bit of effort. you have the Samsung tablet you'll need to set the Chromecast up.
