Anyone using Cubes as part of a Home Cinema setup?

Unread post by montechristo358 »

Liking what the cubettes are doing in my office rig I'm pondering how well cubes would work in the lounge.

However my lounge is a combined Cinema and Music rig.

Not sure if semi omnis will be a good thing for surround sound as the whole point is for the sound to be heard coming from a specific place.

anyone had experience?

I'm using a Linn Isobarik as the centre speaker in my 5.0.2 atmos set up. Briks have somewhat difuse imaging, but it is still doing a good enough job as the speech channel in my setup.

When you look at most all in one cinema speaker systems from the likes of Kef and B&W, they have tragically mediocre speakers compared to what a hi-fi enthusiast can cobble together, either buying used or direct from a low overhead manufacturer or DIY'd.

The basic quality of cubettes will shine through. As a relative compared to other cinema system speakers.

For the 3 main front speakers I think that clarity and dynamics count for more than imaging.
It's nice to have speech repoduced with all the inflection and accent coming through, instead of it being somewhat blurred. It's nice for gunshots to have the crack that they should have.

For the other speakers, their quality is less important. Most TV isn't broadcast as surround sound. And on Blu-rays the rear, side and any upper speakers are only providing the odd bit of gimmicky spatial sound effects.

By all means go ahead and try it. See what you think of cubettes in your system to your ears with your films and music, compared to whatever you were using before. You can always go back to your previous speakers if you don't prefer them.

Also in my room, the imaging is fine if you are sitting in the central spot. If you are sitting to the side, the main speaker on the side you are sitting tends to dominate what you hear. And it sounds like most of the sound effects and bacground music are coming from that speaker in that corner of the room.

Maybe semi omni would be better in the sense that you could sit off centre and not notice one of the speakers dominating ? You could even experiment with tweeters facing in non conventional directions like to the sides or backwards. All good fun :epopc:

My Sky box connects to an input on the P90 SA. Very happy with the tv sound through Cubes. It would be better if I was able to connect it to the Mscaler, dont think the ten year old tv is compatable.
