I've been using a Fiio X3 1st gen for years. Best portable player I have ever had.

SQ from Fiio players is superb, they drive most headphones with ease and that X1 for 50 quid is a steal.

Lots of music Download sources these days where you can pay for a digital-copy of an album that gets loaded directly into a computer. Then transfer via USB to the Fiio. Bandcamp, for instance.

The heydays of illegal free file download are long gone. Maybe somebody you know can send you ripped files via WeTransfer or similar. Or they could load albums onto a MicroSD card you can put into the player.

A USB CD/DVD drive can be got for peanuts. Attaches to a laptop and you can use a free program like EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to make rips for the portable player.

I use ashampoo burning studio free to rip cds and then convert them to FLAC using Foobar 2000.
(Other software is available!)
