Cubbets and sub
had my cubbets for some months now and enjoy them tremendously, haven't heard anything that comes close at this size and price but sometimes they just lack that bit of "scale" I get from my other speakers. This is probably down to the room as I don't have a solid wall I can get them close to as advised, but I wouldn't part with them. Yes my other speakers bring that "scale" back but at a cost, and I start to miss midrange and open treble. So the question is, has anyone tried a sub? Sacrilege i know and the doc (rip)would be outraged I'm sure don't want loads of bass etc and with so many s/h subs around at sensible money I wonder if it's worth I try or should I just not bother and wait? maybe bigger cubes are the answer but they would still need to be at least 18" away from stud wall and built in cupboards? Bear in mind my set up is hardly what you would call "top end". Fire away! (Just kidding)

Re: Cubbets and sub
Not so much these days, due to medical reasons had previously been in the building game for many years. Still reasonable compedent with timber and assembly, soldering etc useless shaking hands! Cocked up my arcam speaker mods(posted elsewhere here) and really no nothing about the complexities of hifi electronics, or indead hifi! just like listening to music. So really looking for an " over the counter " resolution but thanks for asking and before anyone thinks it, p.....d me of as well!

Re: Cubbets and sub
Oh, sorry to hear about your troubles. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to buy something and give it a try. I wouldn't know what to recommend as i have never used sub's. Yes Doc hated them and probably for good reason. They are hard to seamlessly integrate with the other drivers plus a crossover is usually involved. I don't know if there any that run fully open ?
What i would do is get two down firing subs and put your cubette's on top if possible. As you say the other option is to go for a larger NVA cube model.
If it were me i would be building a couple of bass cube enclosures and putting in one of the kevlar 12" drivers in which have been doped. Wire that in series with the mid / bass on the cubette's (if that is possible - may require opening the cubette's) and use the bigger bass enclosure's as stands for the cubette's.

Re: Cubbets and sub
Be aware that If you wire them in series the driver impedance adds, I. E if the cubette is 8r and the bass driver is 6r your amp will see 14r. Whether the amp is fine with 14r I wouldn't know.
A powered sub usually has high and low level inputs, one can be wired via the speaker cables and the other via a pre out. The pre out delivers a line level signal to the plate amp in the sub, This doesn't affect the impedance the main amp sees at its speaker terminals. This approach means you can turn the sub up and down to match the level of the cubette and the overall volume is controlled by the pre as usual
Maybe just get a second hand cheapo active sub and see if you like what it does.

Re: Cubbets and sub
8R bass in series with 8R mid/bass and then tweeter in parallel shouldn't be a problem. 8R tweeter usually has 12R padding resistor in front of it as well.

Re: Cubbets and sub
Why not just look for a 2nd-hand 2.1 computer speaker set with a self-powered sub and use the sub from that?

Re: Cubbets and sub
Try one of these. Not much more or even less than a second hand specialist brand sub. Work well with Cubettes and larger cubes.
