The primary difference with the cubes over normal speakers is the lack of mid/bass crossover.

An idea that deserves a wider audience.

I always put it down to them having reasonable quality drivers including a OK sized bass driver and not having a stooopid ports.

I think the drivers are good enough although some dissenters may say they are cheap Chinese pa drivers. Once doped (of which they are extremely suitable for) they give a detailed, responsive and smooth sound. No crossover is a definite winner imo as well as the semi omni cube design.

The whole flat frquency response thing. Do some actually make their decisions on this one aspect and nothing else ? It is nice to have but not the ultimate goal for me.

Devialet Phantoms are a prime example of this. 16 to 25 khz claimed frequency response and incapable of recreating the sound of a bass drum or bass guitar or a bass in any way that resembles those instruments -relatively speaking.

On their website they say ' With performance 10 to 1000 times superior to anything previously measured, sound will never be the same.' and 'It took over 80 specialists in aerodynamics, automobile, acoustics and mechanics to perfect a system capable of sustaining these extreme physical conditions. 10 years of research and development and 25 million euros went into engineering the best sound in the world.'

Yes that marketing spiel smells of pure bullshit. Devialet is one of the brands i would never entertain. Too high tech for my liking (too much to go wrong), reeks of bullshit and if the pfm fanboys like it then that is a definite no no for me.

I have never heard any and don't suppose i ever will (knowingly ). How much are they ?

£3180 is in the realms of silly money if you ask me. I gather there is a lot of technology inside but even so. I would hate to see a repair bill if something goes wrong out of warranty. How many IC's are in them and what happens when they are obsolete ? How long will Devialet support old product. The risk of it turning in to an expensive door stop is too high for me.

How portist.
I know some ported speakers can sound ghastly, but I have enjoyed others. I suppose that ports, like crossovers, are *somethings* and so can be implemented badly. And may be difficult to implement well.

And then there's my EV Sentry III wide baffle ported speakers with 15" drivers that I'd rate as "average" in the bass department. So even going large may not overcome the sonic drawbacks of ports.

The ported speakers with the best bass that I've come across are probably Steve 57's DIY'd speakers, but then they are semi ported, semi open baffle. And they do have decent quality 18" drivers.

Would anyone care to nominate any ported speakers that they think does bass well?


BTW, apart from sealed and ported and open baffle cabinets, there's also the Hartley Boffle.

This looks like an interesting idea and one worth trying some day...

I used to like my transmission line speakers but that is before i became a bass snob. Will have to get them out and have a listen .

Never seen the Hartley - Turner boffle before.. I love curious designs like that. Would be a good way to use up any bits of carpet underlay you had knocking about.

Current speakers are a set of Bastanis OB’s. These have a 12” wideband that is run open without a crossover, cone is doped to improve high frequency response in a similar fashion to what Richard did. They use a compression tweeter run from a single cap for a simple first order crossover above this.There is also a resistor in series to pad the tweeter down to the 12” sensitivity, and an Lpad to set tweeter levels to taste/room.Lows are taken care of with an 18” Goldwood driver, run from a 3000w Behringer Inuke with DSP, crossover set at 200hz 2nd order. These are capable of some serious bass should you require it, and easily tweaked to taste. Surprising these give more and better bass than my previous OB’s with twin 15” a side.

I've wondered about building something with 2 larger drivers like that. From what frequency does the 18" driver kick in?
