I'm developing the idea that a dedicated power supply just isn't needed. I think you are letting your friendship get in the way of objectivity.

They cost 1000 quid

One of Nick's LPSUs tidied up my Versalex a bit...but that was £200.

I'm not fixed in my idea, just have felt no need. It runs at 33 1/3 perfectly fine.

And surely a bmu would do the same job if you felt you needed it

It's easy to dismiss something if you have not heard what it does.

I HAVE heard Nicks power supply on a 401 and the improvement (positive) was immediately noticeable.

If you want a "technical" answer then I'm sure Nick will give one when he looks in next.

But (DQ) as a "Doc" disciple you will know how important power supplies are to most items in the audio reproduction chain.

Do you use the weight for sound quality or just to flatten warped records?

I used that weight as it gave a slight improvement in the general presentation. Everything gained a little solidity. It does nothing for warps.
I now use a VERY heavy brass puck/weight, (2kg!) which takes that solidity up a notch and also seems to make the quiet bits even quieter. I think this is down to coupling the record tightly to the mat AND killing any resonance in the vinyl.
