mass loading speakers

Unread post by Ordinaryman »

so, cubetts away for a while now and using my dynaudio floor standers {see other post] anyway whilst listening to a few track thought id have a bit of a clear up. stuck the atacam stands ,sand filled and used for cubetts on top of dynaudios whilst I hoovered [yes I do] wow, everything sounded better been listening for a few hours now and all I can say is I was not wrong. better bass, image ,treble etc. don't believe me just stick something heavy on top of your p&s speakers [if you have them] and see, cost you nothing and you might be surprised. Cant wait to get my cubetts back.

Depends on the floor standers and if they're properly spiked or not - there were genuine repeatable reasons why we recommended floor spikes back then for most domestic speakers you know.. ;) Some speakers it makes no difference with, but not getting the boxes to freely wobble must make some sort of sense?

yes, spiked onto the concrete slabs I use for cubetts, I am sure? that the fact that they don't wobble anymore has mad a big difference. all I know is I have never done it before and they really do sound better. before they were just spiked onto floorboards.

Yeah i agree.

I have some old 56 lbs weights that i used to put on top of my floor standing b&w p4's. Did a great job and were really ffing heavy.

In this picture i was using it on top of some 6mm steel i had glued inside a speakercab.

And here are some more being used in some speaker experiments.

Every discerning audiofool should have at least two. They were just hanging around on the farm from when we used to weigh pea sacks before they went to market. When i used them on my b&w speakers my dealer came round ( many years ago) and poo pooed the idea. Sain they would interfere with the speaker drivers. What a load of bollocks. Very soon after that i stopped using dealers

Townshend would of course advocate something different.

  yes! wish I had those weights? maybe you could market them collection only? I guess that's why "the docs" speakers work so well all the energy going down so less wobble? don't you just love it when you find something different (for you) that works!

I have quite a few of them 56 lbs and some 28 lbs and 14 lbs. 56 lbs is a bushell - not many use that old weight system. At least if you took them to the scrappers there would be no argument about how much they weighed

Definitely collection only if you were flogging them. I de-rusted my best pair and they looked quite good when painted hammerite black.

When I Doc-modded a pair of little Mission 760's, the steel plates I glued inside effectively doubled the weight of the boxes.

The sound tightened up enormously and became big, authoritative and dynamic with razor-sharp imaging.
