Re: Getting the best from Streaming music
I've finally finished my pi stack. Added a 1tb ssd, which volumio wouldn't scan properly, it had issues seeing Alac files from my iTunes library. Moode has no such issues and works flawlessly.
Not exactly cheap though. Lifepo 10x battery psu board, Ian's fifopi, dual ess9038 dac board, 1tb Samsung msata ssd and a balanced out iv stage. Probably 700 quid all in, but it shows my Brooklyn dac a clean pair of heels and is all self contained.

Re: Getting the best from Streaming music
I seem to remember that Volumio wouldn't play purchased ALAC files due to licencing restrictions. That was ages ago though, I don't know if that's supposed to have been addressed or not.keepitsimplestupid wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 6:01 pm I've finally finished my pi stack. These were all ripped, it doesn't appear to have been fixed. 600 albums, only the few flac and mp3 showed up. Moode got them first time.

WAV files aren't tagged either. I access all my albums via the file structure, ALAC as well.

Which dac board did you use please?keepitsimplestupid wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 6:01 pm I've finally finished my pi stack. Added a 1tb ssd, which volumio wouldn't scan properly, it had issues seeing Alac files from my iTunes library. Moode has no such issues and works flawlessly.

As a Brooklyn+ user myself, this must sound rather nice if it easily betters it.

Re: Getting the best from Streaming music
I've also become a big fan of the Pi. Streaming audio from an Apple TV is fraught with frightening stuff. First of all it sample rate converts everything to 48k – not in itself a problem if it's done well – but the output also suffers from a lot of jitter. I resorted to stripping the audio out of the HDMI and reclocking it, which made a massive improvement.
Eventually, though, I bought (on Fretless's recommendation) a HiFiBerry Digi+ PRO for a Raspberry Pi 3 that I'd had kicking around for a while. Very simple to set up – I use Raspian as my OS and Plex as my server (with WAVs ripped from my CD collection – I can't really see the point in compressing audio any more – discs are big, and Plex will stream uncompressed to my phone over 4G wherever I go without denting my data allowance much).
The sound from my Pi is as good as anything I've heard. I repurposed the iFi reclocker from the Apple TV setup, though I'm not convinced it really needs it. The whole setup lives in a cupboard and is driven from my phone/iPad/computer/whatever.
I love it! Raspberry Pis all the way for me now.
My next project is to rip the guts out of an old B&W Zeppelin and transplant in another Pi, for portable listening. Not exactly Hi-Fi, but it should be fun.
