Back to subject: I still listen through my Braun CD4 from '87. All it needed over the decades was once the belt for the slider last year.

I suppose it depends on which version. There were 3 different types over the years. I had a 206B and it was one of my favourite two CD players. It stopped working and I sent it to be repaired but never saw it again.

Meridian also made a very early entry in the CDP stakes with their MCD and MCD Pro players. Essentially the transport from a Philips CD-101 and then with all-new power supplies and audio processing.

Heard one long ago and thought it to have a very 'refined' sound.

Enjoying this thread everyone. Recently acquired a virtually unused Cambridge 640V2 for £30 and it's getting a lot of use. Still buy a lot of CD's, mainly for the car but all the formats we have these days I think it's great. Still life in the old cd for me.

Had an mcd and actually liked that one, the only meridian one I have liked even though I did find it abit cold

Had an original xray which I loved, an Inca designs katana that I bought with my redundancy money that I loved, a Sony cdp xb940qs that I really liked, and now im back to early Philips machines with 1541s in. I seem to gravitate back to the early Philips mechs after a while. My 371 has had some new psu caps, some Motorola op amps and some new output caps, lime green nichicon muse bipolars.
My cd160 is knocking around somewhere too. And a cd303 with the 14 bit 1540 in it. Had an early Ferguson cd01 badged Sony cdp, from 1984 but that was abit crap. The 1540 based early Philips were better to me.

After some rummaging around I uncovered my very first CDP, JVC XL-E44. Been stored in a box for at least 25 years. Plugged it in and on came the lights, the drawer opened and the disc played perfectly, doesn't sound bad either.[img][/img]

When the Cambridge CD2's analogue output packed in, I managed for while to keep it running by passing the digital coax signal through a DAT recorder that was lying about. My first experiment with an outboard DAC and reasonably successful - if a little inconvenient. The only method I could find was to leave the DAT in 'record' & 'pause' with the CD2 playing as input and then switch the 'monitor' function on to get music via the audio system.
Every 15 minutes the DAT would automatically switch the record off and would have to be reset. Irritating. Time for a replacement.

Walking past a high-street electricals store I saw they had a clearance sale on, behind the fridges and vacuum-cleaners there was a small array of hifi gear. I spotted a NAD system and asked the salesman about it - the chain had dropped NAD from their assortment and were flogging off the last models at a low, low price. So I walked out with a boxed CD524 clutched to my chest.



It's a cool-looking player with a very neat remote - and yes, it still runs. The sound, like the looks, is very restrained, laid-back and polite. This is not a player that kicks any backsides BUT give it an open, simple recording and it shines. I've heard this from other NAD's - lovely to listen to on piano, guitar, single vocals - however in complex or abrasive music they just go all muddy.

But a pleasant all-rounder that, again, served well as main source for a couple of years and still gets fired up for relaxing background sounds.

For tech buffs : 24 (yes 24!!!) bit processing with 8x oversampling.
