Re: Classic CD Players
The Puris 100 are small (but heavy!) and cost about 60 Euros. I recently bought a Pioneer Pl-514 with an AT-120e for a friend through ebay-kleinanzeigen. It was 90 Euros and sounds fine. It's belt driven but really fine for that price. Then the NVA starter system and an ArtDJPre for 50 Euros (a used Phono 1 would be too much?!). Your within the range and your friend will have a lot of fun!

Re: Classic CD Players
Gathering dust in the attic I have a truly strange and idiosyncratic CDP from the misty dawn of digital audio. The Cambridge CD2.
Cambridge designer Stan Curtis hadn't been too clever with his taxes and had to spend a few months incarcerated for his sins. During this time he pondered the up-and-coming digital Compact Disc situation (expected by many at the time to just be a passing fad) and he had a few ideas. Firstly was the 3-box Cambridge CD1, hooked together with Din cables (all he had lying about at that moment): a transport unit sitting on top of an external DAC / analogue output box with volume control and finally an extra unit that was an error-counter. This displayed the number of drop-outs and corrections made to the data while a CD was playing (a lot!).
With the CD2, he built his own disc transport and hooked 4 TDA1541 audio processing chips in series to create the world's first 16x oversampling player. Hand drawn PCB's and cottage-industry construction. I just had to have one when they came out.
Soundwise? Sadly the analogue outputs packed in years ago - although the coax digital output does still work and I have run it through a DAC occasionally. I remember the sound as being smooth and powerful with a rich midrange but lacking 'sparkle'. Despite it's strangeness it did serve me well for about 10 years and I'll have to plug it in and give it another listen-to one of these days.

Re: Classic CD Players
I found the PL-514 to be a great little TT and have considered getting one off Ebay just for fun.
Very reliable and a pleasant sound.
It certainly turned me into a music-freak

Re: Classic CD Players
Good thought - it's sitting next to my old Logic DM101 which is also in desperate need of an overhaul.
