Time the Slurpers are killed off

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

I rent a shop, I get manufacturers to sell me boxes, I then sell those boxes to people who come in that shop. Does that give me the right to take 50% of your money.

It varies product type to product type, cables can be 70 or 80% to the retailer to bribe him to promote them.

Some established companies who are *needed* agencies get away with only giving 30 to 40%.

I'm thinking that they may have to take 50% to cover, rent, rates and staff. Then again high prices mean few customers. People who don't want to get ripped off go to Richer Sounds or buy online. Maybe it's more viable up north (Huddersfield) were rent is cheaper but crap footy team  I object more to direct or online sales that charge full retail.

That is the next step in the slurp that needs sorting as we go along, but it is the traditional shop and the way they operate and rip you off that is the first target. You will find they are already going on-line to try and save themselves - but reality dictates their time has come to die.

But surely, when you "expand" in the future, with premises, staff, and other normal business expenses, your profit (slurp) will have to increase to cover it all ?

You understand nothing, and especially nothing about me and nothing about NVA, you are just proving to be a troll. It has been explained many times but you ignore it, classic behaviour of a troll.

Back on subject, as I said before we had a perfectly good retail based system where exploitation was deliberately removed by law. It was called retail price maintenance and it ended in the mid 60's. It controlled the market and it allowed sensible profit, it was ended for political reasons as it was seen that by removing it it would create a boost in the economy and public buying power by creating competition. What happened in Hi-Fi was classic and saw sales move to the lowest common denominator box shifters with lowest overheads so lowest prices, with the Japanese the only suppliers able to play this game and British companies died. There was an obvious backlash and certain manufacturers and retailers manipulated the market to increase profit margins and the slurp was created, very successfully to begin with by Linn and Naim and the flat earth, BUT in the intervening period the train has lost its brakes and the slurp has taken control of the market.

Compared with RPM times in the 50's and early 60's you are paying over 10 time as much for equivalent product now as you were then. That is the slurp, I would be happy to go back to the levels of profit of RPM days, that is not slurp, excessive rip-off pricing is the slurp not NORMAL business.

I estimate a specialist Integrated amp that cost £500 in the mid 90s is now £2000 plus. Four times the price at least while pay has probably only increased by 50% at most. Speakers appear to have gone even more stratospheric in price.

Some of the Si and good components not cheap China Crap and have gone up in price, but the worst cost to me is chassis. the old UK chassis maker are gone, and then you have to buy abroad in my case Italy, and in small runs the cost are very high. Even cardboard boxes I have to buy 1000s of if I want a fair price and then pay for storage, it is not a good place to make and design good Hi-Fi in this UK. We the British have killed our on market place by letting money men run it just to make big profits.

Take a point in hand:-
A cable company buys and has made in the UK a good range of cables, but the so called Money Guru has read a American book that state "why work hard" when you can make less product and sell 500% over the cost, just bling it up.
So now we have cable costing less than £5/M to build and it is nothing special or chemically complex, but the Dreaded Profit Guru kicks in lets sell it on at £1500/M and just add mystic crap and tell nobody how it is made and a shiny covers what a Statement of affairs we live in.
But we fools are to blame we buy crap deals like this every day and make men like Trump very rich.

OK the Hi-Fi dealer has high relative cost to sales ratio, let face it he is not Tesco, and Million of customer do not pass through every day so he does have to make a profit, So how do you get a balance a fair price and a good service with good kit?
One way is to take production on and sales and service just like Richie Sounds, Cambridge Audio, etc OK yes it is nearly all made in China, but from my experience with there design team, great care is taken to get good parts.
It can be done so imagine it.
