Record cleaning and WD40 enhancement

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

I have been talking about this for nearly 30 years since I discovered it, but was per usual sneered at called mad etc, but now I find a youtube of what I was talking about. You don't even need to do the first cleaning bit to get the benefit. Its good to hear the benefit at each stage.

My mate Ken, who is an old duffer, has done the same for years. WD40 and wet play... I'm not sure it's for me but he swears by it.

I would urge some caution to anyone whose tip is bonded into the cantilever with glue as I have heard of instances when the tip falls out, the glue having been softened by the chemical used for cleaning the record.

WD 40 contains silicone which likely forms an (immovable) deposit. I'm certainly not comfortable with this and can see long term issues of migration. Perhaps the fact Ken wet plays all his records says it all. I can see damage to cartridges and Silicon impregnating inner sleeves. There are so many alternative, safe and properly tested cleaning methods so why risk it?

WD40 would seem to not contain any silicone, a light machine oil at best Zathras reads
