I liked the 12ac back then but have to defend the *earliest* 12D's at least a bit. A school-pal of mine bought one in his first proper stereo set and the arm was very good on the face of it, with excellent bearings and the deck had a quiet (through the speakers) motor. A year later and I was working in a Watford store based over two nearby sites (one shop, other warehouse) selling over twenty five of the darned things EVERY SATURDAY (I think KJ Watford bought over thirty PL12-D's a week for a good while - the Pioneer distributors must have imported thousands a month at the time, before VAT shot up to 25%). Quality was slipping by then and when the mk2 came out, they were pretty horrid!
I also agree the PL112-D was awful sounding - the flexible 'sub-chassis' must have had something to so with it. We hardly sold any...
If the Sansui 717 was the one that sold on it's lower-than-anyone's W&F figures (yes folks, specs ruled), i remember it being a feedback special, the hollow metal base being like a drum skin when tapped while playing... Another pile of potential poo selling for stupid money! - in my opinion...

Re: How to review properly
A shame to have thread drift on a really interesting and thought provoking OP. Could the t/t posts be moved to their own thread?
