When I first plugged it in I thought it was dreadful. I've had a signal through it 24 hours a day for 8 days now - it has opened out and relaxed a lot in that time. It does have the musical flow that I value.

I'm trying it because the 3v output of my Chord 2Qute doesn't make for finer volume adjustments with very efficient speakers (I've added a set of Klipsch Heresy 3 to my rota).

The Chord is more 'see through' but the Metrum may be more involving, overall. Jury still out.

The Metrum is well worth hearing.

Btw the headphone output is a long way off my AP10H & 2nd supply, but I didn't buy the Metrum for that.

Summer sales - can't resist 'em. Especially when the headphones I really want to hear are then advantageously discounted. There goes the holiday money.

So I am now the curious owner of both the AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon and it's closed'back sibling the NightOwl Carbon.

Image

For a while I have been addicted to the sumptuous, velvet-lined sound of the original NightHawk and was intrigued to discover what the Mk.2 version had changed. That I can sum up in one word - detail.

Physically little has changed on the NightHawk - with the obvious exception of the colour scheme now being a resounding, deep and glossy black. The enclosures are still made of a compressed wood material which is solid but light. A second set of velour earpads are included, but there is now only a single (shortish) cable. Comfort is still the best you can find in headphone-land, these are perfect cans for looooooooooooooong music sessions!

Soundwise - their new set are not 'run-in' but straight out of the box they are noticeably crisper and clearer than the old model. everything is that little bit more defined, but retaining the musicality and enjoyment factor that makes this series of phones so special.

Now looking forward to hearing how the sound alters after a bit of use. I'll be saving the NightOwl for further investigation later on. :music-listen: :music-listening:
