What should I do with my old LP12?

Unread post by CycleCoach »

As i mentioned elsewhere on HFS I am in possession of an aged LP12 turntable.
I would welcome your comments (both constructive and comical) as to what I should do with it next.
Thanks in advance.

Replace the belt with a bike chain, it might then hold speed and not make pianos warble.

Or you could send it to me and I'll happily let you ridicule me for having two!

Sort out the suspension and get a dc motor. Then stop worrying if it is bettered and play your records.

You wouldn't believe the amount of money you can spend on one of those, but I certainly have plenty lying around!

Alfi is too polite/plays it straight, so he won't suggest this:

have a look here: http://www.analogueinnovation.com/page5.htm

From my point of view (and cheap), buy a plattamat, remove baseboard - retain and use rubber feet if old type (if you have one of the various iterations of sprung base boards just remove it, how confused must the old fruit box get with two suspension systems?), if not using one already get a wall mount/shelf.
I would suggest a Heed Orbit if you had a Valhalla, but you seem to have a Lingo.

Above all, do what ever makes you happy.
I find it very strange how so many (ex) owners put down the LP12 - didn't they listen before they bought it?
Even worse, how can people live with their conscience if they actually made money selling them and are only now coming out and saying it is crap.

This is a subjectivist forum, so if you find MP3 more satisfying than an LP12 or analogue in general, I won't say anything more other than: enjoy

I enjoyed both my LP12's, I just happen to like a direct drive more. LP12's can be made to sound great without a second mortgage, as Mentioned by DQ set up the suspension properly and change the motor. My only real gripe with them is the outrageous prices charged for so called experts to even look at then let alone replace any parts. As the enlightened say if you like the sounds it makes just enjoy it.
My stuff; Toshiba SR-370/Mission 774 /Ortofon Quintet Black, Cambridge CXC CD transport/modified Musical Fidelity X DAC/modified Musical Fidelity X10v3 tube buffer, Nakamichi CA5E preamp, Passive RVC, Proton AA-1150 DMC power amp ,Mordaunt Short Signifer on original factory stands, NVA LS5, Cambridge NP30 network player, Mogami with Neutrik RCA, Sennheiser HD650, 600, Koss Pro4 AA.

If it's in good nick I would sell it and buy a Lenco 75 model and get it serviced and popped into a nice birch ply plinth and still have money left over to buy some vinyl.
