Pioneer PL71 Servicing

Unread post by Stemcor1990 » Mon May 07, 2018 5:01 pm

I recently won an auction on eBay for a PL71 at a stupidly low price. I think that most people were put off as it’s a USA model at 110 volts.

“No problem” I thought, I’ll just adjust the voltage plug inside the chassis. So I was a bit surprised / gutted when I opened her up to find no voltage plug !

A quick trip to Maplins later and the 71 is running via a voltage adaptor. This is going to have to be a temporary solution as the adaptor hums a lot so it’s starting to get on my nerves.

When I played my first record, the strobe Iight indicated that the tt was slowly losing speed with a couple of moments when the speed loss was so great that I thought that the thing had blown up. Now that a few sides have been played, everything seems to be fine and there’s no speed drift.

So, does any body know a Pioneer or tt service outfit in London or Essex ? I know that I’m being greedy having 2 of the blighters but they are soooooo good and I want a spare in case one of them has a terminal problem.

Cant you have a look inside see if the voltage is switchable, those old Jap deck usually have a transformer under the hood

You need to unsolder a wire, get the manual from vinylengine, some help here: https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads ... elp.69615/

:auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: :auto-ambulance: So do I simply unsolder the white cable linked to the 120
Volt connection and resolder at the 240 volt connection ? I’m a total novice at electronics so do not what to see what Mr Wonfor calls the magic smoke !

That looks simple even to me! Sure it needs a 'service' if it's now running correctly? Hi-Fi isn't like a car and even then I suspect a lot of what needs doing regularly is BS.

I took the baseplate off the chassis this evening and the wires are soldered. I have a soldering iron but need to buy some solder so there’s a nice job for the weekend.
