Thanks for your patience, Stu
we could do with a Streaming Terminology thread, we could do Q&A and make it a sticky?

DAC's.

I've had a few during the last 15 years and here are some thoughts:

MF V-DAC: 2nd hand unit is a good place to start.
MF M1DAC: makes all music sound 'pleasant'.
Hegel HD25: powerful sound. DSD capable.
Cambridge DacMagic Plus: superb for the price. Can be improved with an LPSU.
Metrum Musette: NOS (Non Oversampling) technology provides gorgeous musical transparency. And it was their starter model (discontinued).!!!

NOS DAC's work on a basis of no/minimum filtering and processing of the audio data to preserve the integrity of the music. I went from the Hegel to the cheaper Musette but found a big difference in musicality.

George Hincapie had a little Starting Point NOS DAC3 he was loaning out to interested forum members, don't know if he still has it.
He had a Beresford Caiman SEG and didn't seem all too impressed by it.

NOS is non oversampling (technically) a lot of NOS DACs actually mean non UPsampling which aren't really the same thing

In Shoues I'd follow the DOCs suggestion, even if you hate it, the Linear PSU can be retasked to the PI

You wont regret it quite a few have heard it here and don't believe it. It is fairly close to the Sony DAS R1 i used to own in musical ability and that is the best i have ever heard and *I think* the best ever made even now. Everything else is sterile by comparison, but not this cheapo combination, it really plays music, I don't know why, probably simplicity (remember that).

I sold my DAS R1 for nearly £2000 that is how much it is respected http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-DAS-R1.html
