Thanks Zebbo,

Seems like nobody yet is using the last half a dozen steps and maybe the first two or three.

Revisiting this thread that I had forgotten about. Thanks to all who replied.

Doc warned me I would regret not having all the steps on a 24 way but then most didn't get past step 15 on a 10K stepped attenuator. So what's the point in having the resistor values past about 2K ohms. They will never get used :roll: unless you use a source with very low output voltage.

Also a few who replied mentioned they did not use the first few steps either. So maybe I don't have to use the very low value resistors at the bottom of the volume control as well as the very high value resistors at the top end of the volume control. That will further decrease the attenuation level between steps which will give finer control of volume in the area that is most used - the steps can be concentrated in the range that is actually used.

Somebody tell me if I am mad in my thinking here. Anyway, as my kids are getting older and will at some point use my sound system it seems wise to manufacture some maximum volume level in to the stepped attenuator. If I only go as high as 2K ohms for the resistor to ground then that will be the maximum volume (between step 15 and 16 on a 10K, 24 way stepped attenuator). No party volume levels whilst I am out :twisted: and more importantly no fried NVA amplifier boards or speaker drivers. Seems like a sensible plan to me :guiness;

Being able to turn the volume down to zero is useful for me if I'm swapping the source interconnects to another device without having to turn the amps off.

Yes of course. The first step is zero ohms ie a wire link . No resistor required for silence.
