_D_S_J_R_ wrote: Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:41 pm I recently read one iffy review on here about the loan BMU, but looking at the chap's system rang alarm bells for me, as I remember his choice of speaker not being very good especially in the bass apart from the makers reputation of old which still carries him along in the UK-used and export markets at least.

Please don't expect a BMU to transform the sound of an iffy system to a hugely higher level, 'cos it won't. If the sound is basically good, with a tuneful and taut bass reproduction especially rather than a boomy stodge which many manufacturers call 'bass,' and with a midrange which is able to convey the air, atmosphere and acoustic of a recording venue or recording production, you should find the BMU helps the ability to 'suspend disbelief' in the sound so you can more effortlessly hear into the recorded mix for musical benefit and not just forensic clarity. Nothing to do with listening-room atmosphere, humidity and listener's mood, both of which can change on a whim, but deeper than that and in this case, for objective measurable differences too I believe.

S'cuse the verbal diarrhoea above. The BMU benefits, if you need and hear them, are permanent and these benefits in 'listening comfort' don't alter from day to day.

Try one, if you enjoy music rather than 'just' the sound, you may find it indispensable
That probably isn't me but in my case it sort of tightened the bass a little too much and introduced a slight high end hardness. System was more precise but didn't breath as well. I don't think it's the speakers which aren't boomy, but maybe the Albarry amps did not gel well? I didn't have time to swap out each components connection to bypass the BMU in an attempt to isolate this. It could be some Chord cables which I am yet to change to NVA?

Wasn't you unless you changed to Pro-Acs? The Albarry amps were designed by a master (rip Neil) who'd probably be well aware of mains issues and designed accordingly in the preamp at least, as AVI did way back when even in the Kelvin Labs days..

Thing is, you can borrow a BMU and try it with an open mind. if it's not for you, send it on or back...

What's the issue with Proacs? The current ones I have heard beat the hell out of certain other current designs notably those BBC clones. He now has a special edition of the later - a bit of bling and higher price (better components that should have been used in the first place). You should hear how bad Mission have become! My 752's are a hard act to beat for sensible money. Yes I tried the loan BMU and found it didn't quite gel. Also made the transformer in my buffer stage buzz like hell. Possible it may do that with any Lehmann component.

Pro-Ac, now where do I start? No, I'd better not as I knew them quite well once, but very few of them have what I call a decent quality bass in my opinion and so many had a recessed midrange deliberately designed in, quite severe in some cases which gave a nice spatial effect I agree. If you can adjust to the presentation, please try to hear some some Cubes to see where I feel I'm coming from where tuneful bass quality is concerned ;)

My favourite Pro-Acs were the Response 2's and I think there was a not huge three way with ATC drivers which weren't bad either at the time.

We only know what we have and what we have heard. You need to keep an open mind.

of course i will,i was referring (tongue in cheek)to daves comment about an iffy system not your bmu.
the old olson mains block i bought, was fitted with good quality MK sockets, after a good clean of the conections and pins i noticed an improvement.this has got me interested in the 'mains thing'.
i hope it does make a difference.

I was talking generally about peoples systems. We get an ego attachment to our choices that is hard to break through. It is what stops most people progressing their systems, but you only know what you know, to presume that to be the height of possible awareness is arrogance in extreme. Exampled by Marco, he no longer looks or listens because he has decided he and his is best, but this is a personality strait as well.

I can't help with hearing other product but the point of the loans and bake-offs is to create another path. If that path is better it should not be denied, but yet again it should not be presumed to be the ultimate - we should all keep open minds. I am commenting to you because you have come across to me as being fixated on your own choices as opposed to an open mind. Logic would have dictated that you would have jumped on the loan scheme before now, and yes I know you are under AoS influence.

There are many thing available for loan and more will appear in time as I can get around to it. Take advantage, listening to music and judging the quality is what this hobby should be about.
