Speakers for my new A20+P20 Sys

Unread post by MarcoPisa » Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:24 am

Still waiting for my new NVA entry level System to be delivered but I would like to receive some suggestion about bookshelf speakers to partner with it. My budget is around 200 pounds max brand new. I will install the sys in a small room 3x4. I usually listen to pop/rock and I prefer detail over the punch. There is a lot of stuff in that price range out there. I heard NVA amps are a lil bit fussy about speakers, and don't partner well with complex crossovers.
So, I found a pair of JPW Mini Monitors and a pair of Jpw 202 brand new. Other possible options are Klipsh R15M, Wharhedale 9.1 or above, Elac Debut, Indiana Line Nota or Tesi, Mission Lx2, Qacoustics 3020,Monitor Audio etc.
Any suggestion, even from Mr Dunn, are welcome. Thank you.

I have a P20/A20 and looked for speakers up to about £150/pr. I have not listened to the Elacs or Klipsh's so can't comment however I have listened to the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s/Q Acoustics and Monitor Audios in this budget and to my surprise and IMHO the JBL Control 1s (on offer at £79/pr at Richer Sounds) sounded better balanced and also more more dynamic/expressive and I understand have a very simple crossover. The bass is not that extended but at this price I don't think one can complain and I would rather have a flatter bass response than one that is extended by introducing a mid bass hump that so many small speakers see to exhibit.

Yah, I forgot about JBL..that's a very good suggestion, I read good reviews about the Control 1 in the past. I don't really like that Loudness feeling many speakers have nowadays too.

A suggestion that is beyond your budget (sorry), but might last you a lifetime...a secondhand pair of Klipsch Heresys. I heard a pair with a a 10w valve amp this week and they were a lot of fun. There are not many around here (UK) but you may have a wider choice in Italy?

At the opposite end of the budget...1980s vintage Mission 70MKII. They are sealed box (always a good thing imho as I hate ports), very simple crossover, the whole back half comes away to open them up for very easy (doc) modding, they are a piece of cake to drive and they 'boogie'. Expect to pay £30 to £50 for a pair in decent nick from a private seller.

An example here, they come up reasonably frequently: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-80s-Vin ... Sw3YNXY38I

Otherwise, my only other advice is don't buy at rrp - either go used (there are always lots of bookshelf speakers available on ebay etc) or heavily discounted (e.g. the JBLs recommended by alfafan).

Thanks Paul. I'm not a big fan of the ports too, except for small speakers. I believe some of the best non ported budget speakers were produced in Germany and Nedherlands by Canton,Grundig and Philips and they are quite famous in Italy same like RCF which is an italian brand. The Heresys are quite famous too and usually overpriced. I'll chech out the Mission you suggested. Regarding non ported speakers I found a pair of brand new Jpw mini monitor with a mark on one side for 70 euro shipped.

There are a few JPW owners on here, I think. Hopefully they will see this thread and join in...

I have used JPW, gold monitor, Sonata, AP3 and Doc modded P1 speakers with my NVA amps and thoroughly enjoyed them all of them up until the point that I managed to try a pair of Epos speakers with them. The Gold minitors with the resistor changed to bring the high frequencies down a touch are surprising for their size and price without any other mods. All of the JPWs benefitted from having the caps replaced. The crossovers are not as simple as some would have you believe with caps and an inductor to the mid/bass driver.

I now have Epos ES11 and Epos M5i. They both have greater clarity than the JPWs and the ES11 doesn't have any components to the mid/bass driver and just a single capacitor and resistor to the tweeter, they are ported but have never given me any issues (although I do appreciate the taut bass of the infinite baffle JPWs). To my ears the Epos speakers are very natural sounding and although some people are said to find them bright I don't and they work really well with NVA amps in my opinion. I won't be changing mine any time soon. Both of these sets of Epos speakers can be had for less than £200 second hand in the UK and the veneer finish on the ES11 is as good as any other speakers that I have seen but it does seem that there are quite a few tatty pairs around, a bit of TLC to the cabinets is well worthwhile and they are easy to dismantle and reassemble to work on the cabinets.

I had a pair of Epos ES14 in the late 80s / early 90s. I really liked them but for an apparently booming bass. With more knowledge I have long since realised that it was my LP12 that was the 'bass problem'. I swapped the ES14s for Kans

Rega R1’s were great little speakers too. Should be pretty affordable if and when they turn up secondhand.
