No need for a CDP at all these days; there are higher SQ options.

Some people like playing their physical media and don't want the faff of ripping CD's.

I'm one of them. Not intrested about file based audio system as long as I can have music I want on physical media.

I do find that my CDs sound better after being ripped - the theory is that the ripping software (e.g Exact Audio Copy) reads the disc several times over and therefore has the chance to correct more errors.

I also love being able to listen to high res 24 bit downloads, Qobuz, tidal etc through a streamer. I don't feel the same attachment to the physical CD as I do to my vinyl collection, and the streamer option gives obviously better sound (to my ears), useful convenience and more 'content' such as booklets that accompany downloads. I wouldn't go back to a CDP if you paid me to.

Set up of streamers / computer audio is a lot simpler and more robust than it was 5-10 years ago, and kit like Raspberry Pi make it relatively affordable to try out.

Me neither. I've a few things to try before giving up on the Sony, but i'm confident i'll get it working again :geek:

I concur with this and have sold my CD players after ripping my CDs. The improved SQ is major. My main source though is Tidal as to my ears there is no difference in SQ to ripped CDs.

The lens cleaning made no difference whatsoever, so i decided to clean and put a very fine film of sewing machine oil on the tracks that the laser mech runs on. I then skipped through the songs on a CD from start to finish to ensure the mech tracks were lubed and…

BINGO!
It lives again :guiness; :mrgreen: :dance:

No idea if that was the correct thing to do, but it worked 8-)
I shall now treat myself to bottle or two of wine :obscene-drinkingdrunk:

Maybe that would have fixed Jammy's machine?

I think that what ever you use as lubricant should be safe for plastic (if it comes into contact with any palstic).

Well done Jonty, I think this method is often recommended as a cure. More than saved you a couple of bottles of wine. :guiness;
