hearing test

Unread post by karatestu »

I will soon be arranging one of these.

I had to have one of my ears syringed a couple of months back. I also had some very low level hissing in my ears only detectable at bed time. I hoped this would go away after the syringing but it hasn't

I think this may be tinitus from my 20' and 30's when i was a semi pro drummer and the years of powered machinery exposure.

Does it ever go away ? What can be done about it ? Does it make me hear certain frequencies more ?

Mine started at one of the Led Zeppelin gigs at earls Court in '75. My ears rang badly for days after (no joke). Five years on the noisy trains to work in the west end kind of cemented in a continuous issue whih got a bit better in my late twenties to my mid 40's when our living location in a dank area in East Northants caused me endless ear infections and this was confirmed by a consultant ENT specialist (I wonder if the beginnings of my T2 Diabetes were making them even worse) and the rest is current history and is giving me issues with 'smooooooth' loudspeakers played at low volumes now as I lose the lower hf until they're turned up a bit.

Bloody annoying and it won't now get any better either :angry-steamingears:

People don't realise how dangerous large PA's are. You often don't realise the damage they are doing because they don't sound distorted (loud). Never use a high power pro amp at home.

The Led Zep PA was awful and only just acceptable outside the main auditorium. A performance of The Wall there some years later was rather better - loud but not screaming.

I keep putting it off, but I'm going to have to bite the bullet sooner or later. Sometimes, these days, I GENUINELY don't hear what the missus is telling me. Joking apart though, I've started noticing that certain voices on the telly need more volume for me to hear what's being said clearly of late so I'm on the slippery slope I guess.

Ears are a fundamental part of this hobby. Best not to abuse them but when young we think we are bomb proof. I had trouble hearing the Mrs before i had the syringing - wish i hadn't bothered

But surely that would make them better if the don't distort and that is the problem with all the HiFi that are hear it just cant give that crisp sound to notes that even a small PA system played by a street busker can do or maybe my ears are out of tune.

I think the problem with very high power un-distorted sound is that your ear drums will burst before your tweeters go up in smoke. As my system has improved I can run it at higher volume without it sounding 'loud'. Only when you turn it down you realise your ears are humming. So PA levels in the home are not safe and watch the volume.

I had my hearing tested a few years back and was told it was fine. In complete silence I can hear a pin drop, but this is not the case if there is a lot of background noise. In a noisy environment, such a pub, I often fail to make out what a person next to me is saying.

Folks - we need to accept that high frequency hearing degenerates with time. It's inevitable. Just manage it as best you can. It may come to hearing aids - if anyone has experience with different hearing aids, please post as I may end up there.

The "hissing" (or sometimes a high pitch whine) is known as Tinnitus. It is incurable. I've had it since I was a child and I though everyone had it. It's now worse on my left side as I also have Ménière's disease which increases the tinnitus and gives a feeling like a blocked ear. I try not to let these interfere with my listening and I can still hear stuff my wife can't - and she's a couple of years younger than I am.

Life's a bitch and then you die :x
