 Nice turn of phrase.

The 5 people you mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg.

Is there anyone whose advice you think is so bad that, as a general rule, whatever they advise, you should do the opposite for best results?

EG someone whose advice is: Go to a dealers and buy the latest equipment (brand new). Spend as much on cables and fuses as you can - to the point of spending more on them than on your amplifier or speakers. Get the best digital source you can, even if that means using ultra-budget (brand new) speakers. etc etc etc.

Oh it's great to be back. Thoroughly entertaining reading, thank you.

BTW....

The earliest meaning of 'cadger', was as the name of itinerant dealers who traded in butter/eggs etc., which they transported by pack-horse. This dates from the 15th century.

Men who had fallen on hard times and had resorted to any means possible to keep body and soul together were often those who were too old to find work. A cadger was likely to be a grizzled character wanting to borrow or steal from you; a codger was a peculiar and unfashionable chap, and both were likely to be old. 'Old codger' is most likely to be the linguistic merging of all those images.

Anyone..........?

Going right back, Chris Frankland has to be included. He was Ivor's puppet. There was an instance when someone who wanted a cassette deck was recommended the Linn Sondek so he would have the best possible source for recordings. There are many more examples.

I recall a fairly recent post here stating that the deficiencies he commented upon in most recordings were in fact those of the LP12! I can also recall it being posted that he served time - was it for bullshit in the extreme!!!

To my knowledge he has never posted on forums. I don't think he dare he would be taken apart.

The things he missed out or wont tell you.

1/ The curse of the claw was Doug Hewitt who owned Manticore in Biggleswade when I was just down the road to him in Hatley St George. We sort of became friends but he was a reals piss take artist beyond my levels and a piss head as well. I fed a lot, if not most, of the titbits he published to him, but he avoided some of the choice Linn Naim ones as Chris wouldn't allow it, so you could say I was a co author. Doug is now a manager in a supermarket.

2/ Chris was an odd lad, very shy believe it or not especially with girls, never had a girlfriend, not gay, simply naive and shy. He was about 30 at this time. Well a lady came to do his books, and realised she could completely control him, played him like a fish to the point he was completely fixated on the fact he had finally discovered what he had between his legs. She realised he was in trouble financially with the company and was defrauding the VAT people every month. She reported it, and he was interviewed and arrested, she then striped the company bare and left and Chris went to jail for 6 months for VAT fraud. He got a job when he came out in security at Gatwick Airport, and now does editing work for what was the old Wireless World magazine, now called Electronics World I think. Also does freelance work for Hi-Fi Critic.

Completely brainwashed and infatuated by and with Ivor and Julien.
