Room acoustics

[Admin- tidying]
Having now spent a lot of time with my NVA I have experienced complete aural nirvana.

I am blessed (cursed really) with a highly critical ear, whilst I will derive huge pleasure from the resonance of a single note after its been played (and with NVA, have done).

But I've got a bit of a problem. My listening room has large oak beams and I think I'm losing some of the up fired sound waves as they bounce around said beams.

I've been trying to come up with a solution and have thought to suspend some reflective panels but it's a bit drastic.

My neighbour has a pair of Duevel Bella's and looking at these I had a light bulb moment.

God knows what the Docs going to say

I have Cubix in a room which has just two beams which run across the room ceiling and Cubettes in another room which is similar and where they are set up close to a window with velvet curtains. The seem to work well in both of these situations. However, I have other rooms where all the beams and joist are revealed (previous owner's idea, not mine). I guess I could easily move the Cubette system into one of those rooms and try.

(Of course I will be using my ears, not yours)

Of course, you haven't said if you hear a difference (improvement) from your efforts. (Me, I'm pretty sure I couldn't cut four pieces of 15mm copper pipe to the same length).

There is a definite improvement in the balance especially at lower volumes but the presentation is a little harsh when listening to a soprano solo.

A work in progress, the copper pipe is a temporary measure, 20mm clear acrylic rod coming Monday.

It is all wrong I hate it, but your ears are king. You are creating a horn throat that will change the balance of the drivers and honk at the resonanse frequency of the horn throat. It looks from the picture that you have pulled the speakers further out into the room, that is what is causing your problem not beams, push them back to the wall again.

Don't worry, they want straight back to the walls where they belong. I get what you mean with he honk analogy but they do push the sound out into the room. Having started to really appreciate the system I noticed that it sounded really good but on the other side of the room, hence my belief the sound waves are bouncing around the wood work.

Something that I've experienced with the Cubette system - it's in my dining room and the sound does change depending on where around the table I sit. My Cubix system room has more fixed seating, so I haven't noticed it so much in there. FWIW I don't think it is the beams, it's more the relative position of you and the speakers in the room.

I wondered about this.

So I relocated my Minimal System

This has a similar ceiling arrangement

Both of these are viewed from the listening position - about 4 metres away.

Now, I think my room is a bit taller and obviously the system is different, but the quality of the sound didn't changed dramatically for me.
(Note I have an ulterior motive in this post - I wanted to check whether that pesky file attachment functionality has changed - it hasn't).
