Denon DA-300USB DAC Review
Denon DAC DA-300USB
Picked this up cheaply on Amazon recently, wasn't expecting too much from it but was happily surprised by the quality.
Its a substantial beast as these things go, weighing 1.5Kg, it uses the same Burr-Brown PCM1795 chip (combined with Denon's AL32 DSP) used in Denon's DCD-2020AE SACD Player which costs around £1500.
I've used it mostly in a Computer setup with Windows 7, running Foobar2000 and Denon's ASIO USB driver. Connected to a set of M-Audio active monitor speakers.
Sound quality is a big step up from a PC sound card, even running from cold. It has a rich timbre with voices and acoustic instruments and provides good stereo separation. I could not really judge its high and low frequency extremes as the speakers were a limiting factor. So I connected it to my main system using a Marantz SA-11S2 as a transport. I tried both coax and optical connections, not much difference between them.
The performance of the DAC continued to impress running though full range speakers. It matched the DAC in the Marantz for detail, but had a slightly warmer sound. One problem did show up at this point. The Denon DAC uses a cheap switch mode power supply, this injects a slight hum into the audio output, even when the DAC unit is powered off. Once you unplug the power supply the hum vanishes. This hum was present on the computer setup but was not loud enough to hear over the PC background noise. If I was going to use this DAC in my main system, I would probably buy a linear mode power supply with a 5v output to replace the stock PSU. However, at this price (around £180) its a minor issue.

Ain't got a clue what it's for, or how you play an LP on it, but I like Denon......
Still using my Denon DVD player after 20 years.....

I bet a Doc PSU would transform it to something special, same as I'm sure a Doc PSU for the HiFiBerry would.

As I said before, I could but I wont. If you show me a pic of the back I will tell you all about it yet again.
There is a reason why these people use low voltage external wall mounted power supplies. Once again https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appliance_classes and there are enough eeediots recommending people break the law as with LDR pre-amps without me joining in.

Re: Denon DA-300USB DAC Review
From close-ups of the back of the DA300 it looks as if the power supply needed is 15V / 1A DC. So a specialised linear PSU would be needed.
Anybody got any thoughts about ferrite rings on the power cable, or earthing the case?
Are you using software volume control and is your amp earthed properly? I have run into both these issues with DAC's.

That is not what I am talking, on the back it should by law if sold in the EU have symbols or words to say what appliance class it is.

Re: Denon DA-300USB DAC Review
If it is sold in the EU like that then it is illegal as there are no CE or appliance code markings. My guess is that it is ClassIII as it can't be ClassII with all those screw heads on the back panel and it is not ClassI as there is no case earth.
Typical cheap trying to get around the regulations and Denon as a reputable company, should stop it. Though note made in China, and mostly they couldn't give shite about the safety regs.

So many of these products seem to put stickers with regs on the bottom, I know the Sonos products do that as do the Bluesound range.
