12th century English example

Forrþrihht anan se time comm
þatt ure Drihhtin wollde
ben borenn i þiss middellærd
forr all mannkinne nede
he chæs himm sone kinnessmenn

Modern English translation

As soon as the time came
that our Lord wanted
be born in this middle-earth
for all mankind sake,
at once he chose kinsmen for himself,
all just as he wanted,
and he decided that he would be born
exactly where he wished.

I would introduce a Frisian song. It is from the north of Holland. I am sure you all understand most:

"Bûter, brea en griene tsiis, wa't dat net sizze kin is gjin oprjochte Fries".

Old English has more in common with Frisian language than any other.

It is definitely cheaper to Amsterdam by Ryan Air or easyjet than by train to York.

Between the dissolution of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Vikings there was a civilization based in what is now central-Holland and they called themselves the Frisians. They operated a trading empire that stretched from Ireland to Austria (W-E) and from Scandanavia to Spain (N-S).

The Frisians made use of water-borne transport and used the North Sea and the Rhine as highways throughout Europe. They basically invented modern currency and spread their language and business culture to create the basis for a pan-european economy - that the Vikings then took over by force.

The Frisians home base was 'Dorestad' now called Wijk-bij-Duurstede, a small town south-east of Utrecht.

Another Dutch connection to the UK is that much of the east coast from the Fens to Hull, was drained by Dutch engineers in the 15th-17th centuries, leaving a network of dykes and windmills and many place names that can be traced back to Dutch origins.
