Diapason Karis
Popped in for coffee and a chat with my local Hifi dealer and he told me that he was just back from a factory tour at Diapason Loudspeakers in Italy. A small-scale company active since that late 80's, Diapason was founded by a Classical-music recording engineer who was unhappy with the quality of studio monitors and decided to build his own.
Philosophy of the design is simplicity and build quality. Particularly of interest to me is the smallest speaker in the Reference Series, the Karis:
These things are small, really tiny - they make my Mission 760's look bulky. With an 11cm mid/bass driver and a 19mm tweeter. They are carved from blocks of solid Walnut by a team of professional instrument-makers over a six-month period, so the wood is allowed to rest and mature once worked on.
Karis cabinets weigh about 5Kg apiece and the mid-bass driver has no crossover!! There is a very basic link for the tweeter
Been reading up some very impressive reviews for these and hope to hear some soon, my dealer is trying to get a pair, or something from the same series, in for a demo in the near future.
But at almost 3000 euro (2000 pounds) a pair, they don't come cheap.
Anybody out there heard these or any other Diapason speakers?

Re: Diapason Karis
Don't be a mug Fretless he wants to be your friend so he can rip you off, all he is telling you is bullshit to try and justify ridiculous prices. Do you seriously think these are any musically better than your little Doc Mods that cost you about £25.
Ignore the bastards just go and get coffee from them and pretend to listen to their bullshit until they go bust

Re: Diapason Karis
Don't be silly Shane, it's the CABINETS that cost the main dough and like Sonus Faber, a lot of time and energy would go into making them. Like the Doc mods, a solid box helps any old drive-unit work better than it would in a plain MDF box stuffed with incorrect and cheap wadding!
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

Re: Diapason Karis
Not seriously considering laying out any dosh - what I really want to do is hear the things because they are made using the same principles as Doc Mod speakers:
Massive cabinets, solid construction
No crossover on mid/bass, minimal crossover on tweeter.
And they do look like small sculptures.
If I get to hear them I'll report further.

But yes none the less to us mere mortals they could be costrued as expensive. (Yep i had a large malt once i pushed the dreaded "Buy Now")
Rip off - mmmh i geuss you would need to hear em first, i luv em, and think not.
Paired with my AP10hJS they make sounds that you would be hard pushed to match with a coventional system regardless of cost.
