Cheap But Good Speakers.
Some folks think I'm foolish that I'm using JPW ML-110i speakers. Why, because in their shallow minds they label them as cheap and low end.
I wonder, have these people ever actually heard them with decent equipment??
What are your ''budget wonder'' speakers as used in a main system or for back up?

Mines are almost touching the back walls. The reinforcement does help.Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote:Same as you but mine are black.

I like some of the earlier Wharfedale Diamonds and have a pair of IV's. The later Diamonds 7.2 is another smoothie but after this they seemed to bloat too much in the mid-bass.
Please guys, don't even think these cheapies are 'giant killer' speakers, 'cos a proper bigger speaker eats them alive and bigger speakers are far more efficient too! What you can get for well under thirty notes on the used market though is remarkable

Cheap amps? Yup.
Cheap CD players? Yup.
Cheap turntables? Yup.
I do struggle with cheap speakers ... and with cheap cartridges as well.
It seems to me that it's transducers (that convert electrical to mechanical energy, or vice versa) that need a bit of expensive sophistication in design to make them work convincingly for me.
But those little Q-Acoustics speakers of Gromit's were good, if a bit raucous.
From my own boxswapping, some JBL L110 monitors were astonishingly good at around £150 used.
And SD Acoustics SD1 were stupidly good at £220.
It's ages (many decades!) since I heard a JPW speaker, but I do recall they sounded good at the time.

I like SD1s and always have. Never had a room to do them justice though. £220 is a ludicrous price too. Cheaper than a tatty pair of Kans.

I have never heard SD1's but thier reputation puzzles me .
they have the exact same drivers as jpw ap2 very similar volume cabinets . Indeed i am lead to believe the only difference is the x-over and the x-over on jpw ap2 is 3 elements ?

Err I think you might mean Snell K? SD1s are huge buggers. Massive bass unit and semi OB mid/ribbon tweeter.
Snell Ks look like nothing special. If anything you might be forgiven for thinking they look like a cut down AP2. They are significantly clearer though and have a real "snap" to the timing. Evetything just sounds so addictive and fast. The designer believed a speaker shouldn't store energy. Instead they should just release whatever is put through them. The Ks sound like he knew how to do just that. They aren't just for valve amps either, although some forum egos might wish to tell you otherwise.
